ChinesePod - Chinese learning for busy people
ChinesePod was founded in September 2005 with the mission to make Chinese learning easier for busy people by combining modern pedagogical principles with the latest web and mobile technologies. Over the past 6 years, we have served millions of students, produced thousands of lessons and have have hopefully changed a few lives along the way!
The fact is while learning Chinese can open up new opportunities - both professional and personal - it is still too difficult for most people to learn a new language as an adult.
ChinesePod applies technology to create a new learning experience that makes learning Chinese as convenient, flexible and fun as possible.
ChinesePod is designed, from top to bottom, to fit Chinese learning into your life.
Do you want to gain a valuable new skill, explore a fascinating culture, expand your intellectual horizons and improve your personal marketability? ChinesePod gives you the content, tools and community to help you get it done.
How does ChinesePod work?
It's pretty simple - we have 2 types of products:
- Subscriptions - A subscription gives you full access to the entire ChinesePod lesson library and all the study tools. There are currently approximately 2,000 lessons covering almost every situation you might find yourself in China. This is an ideal option for the self-study student or a student that already has a Chinese teacher.
- Classes - Practice what you learn in the lessons with a daily 20-minute, one-on-one telephone class. This is an ideal option for a student that wants a convenient alternative to traditional, classroom study.
Why does ChinesePod work?
In a traditional classroom, students passively listen to a lecture by their teacher and then review their homework after class. In a 'flipped classroom', students listen/watch their lesson before class leaving classroom time able to exclusively focus on practice and review. At ChinesePod, we believe this approach is a more effective way for busy people to learn Chinese so this is how we have structured our classes.
A typical student experience:
1. Listen to a lecture on your morning commute.
2. Study the lesson for a few minutes at work.
3. Practice with a teacher in class or over Skype.
4. Review your vocabulary on the way home.
Many of our competitors use an out-dated style to teach Chinese to adults, whereas we apply the tested principles of teaching English as a foreign language to the teaching of Chinese. We believe that adults learn best when they have relevant and engaging input, personalized review tools and speaking practice that are delivered to them at their own pace and convenience.
Don't forget about our mobile apps to make your study even more convenient!

What are the principles behind the ChinesePod approach?
The ChinesePod Pedagogical Framework is founded on three cornerstones:
1. The Natural Approach
The Natural Approach emphasizes a communicative and a comprehension-based approach to learning languages. This means that ChinesePod lessons and teachers focus on natural dialogue between native speakers, with a strong emphasis on realistic situations. In this way, students are empowered to make sense of the language in real life and can quickly bridge the gap between theory and practice.
2. The Lexical Approach
The Lexical Approach argues that a rule-based grammatical approach is less helpful (and less accurate) than a descriptive approach based on words (or "lexis"). A lexical focus is concerned with how words are used, as well as word combinations (or "collocations"), rather than all the rules and endless exceptions we call "grammar." True to this theory, ChinesePod emphasizes the usage of words and the patterns in which they appear, rather than letting a grammar outline determine instruction. Over the course of many modular podcast lessons, this approach becomes very powerful. This does not mean that grammar is not important. In fact, grammar is featured in each ChinesePod lesson but taught in the context of the lesson rather than from a disembodied list.
Built on the power of increasingly interconnected information, connectivism emphasizes the individual's "capacity to know" through one's own learning network. ChinesePod builds a community of passionate Chinese learners who become a vital source of knowledge and support. The learning content itself is always accessible on demand, whether on the computer, smart phone, tablet or smart TV.
