Beginning on April 15, climate change activists coordinated acts of civil disobedience across London leading up to a final protest targeting London’s financial district on Thursday.

Protestors with the Extinction Rebellion group blocked the entrance to the London Stock Exchange and demonstrated outside of the Treasury as well as several international banks.

The activists hoped to shed light on the financial sector’s role in “funding climate and ecological destruction,” the Associated Press reported.

The organizers demanded that the U.K. government treat climate change as an emergency, commit to net-zero greenhouse gases by 2025, and create a citizen assembly for climate action.

The protestors’ nonviolent but disruptive tactics elicited mixed reactions from the British public and government officials.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted that the demonstrations had become “counter-productive.”

As reported in Reuters, the organizers argued that public action is necessary to increase awareness.

Activists launched the Extinction Rebellion movement in October in response to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report on the potentially disastrous effects of a 1.5°C increase in global temperatures.
