Artificial intelligence experts have issued a joint letter to Amazon calling on the company to stop selling its facial recognition software, Rekognition, to law enforcement agencies.

A.I. researchers at Google, Microsoft, and Facebook are among the letter’s cosigners.

Joy Buolamwini, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has demonstrated disproportionately high error rates in Rekognition’s identification of women versus men and dark-skinned versus light-skinned faces.

Amazon has publicly dismissed Buolamwini’s work.

However, Turing prize winner Yoshua Bengio and other leaders in the A.I. field have defended Buolamwini’s findings and activism.

As reported in the Associated Press, Buolamwini said that the scholarly community and the public “can’t just leave it to companies alone to do these kinds of checks.”

Facial recognition software has begun to permeate the social and technological landscape, affecting not only law enforcement but also data privacy and informing the mechanisms by which self-driving cars “see” pedestrians.

Many industry insiders and academics argue that greater regulation is urgent. A bipartisan bill to limit the use of facial recognition technology has been introduced to the U.S. Congress.
