The Chinese Art of Hinting

One of my most frequently used phrases to explain Chinese sentences is "it's implied". Subject pronouns are often omitted and the only way to understand if an action has taken place is by inferring from the context. Chinese has a very "philosophical" and floating nature when it comes to grammar. And in life too.

Crucial information is often wrapped in subtle hints which are far too easy to gloss over. Below are a few real life exchanges I encountered between Chinese and Westerners which illustrate how elusive the signals are.  I must declare though, these are examples from my personal observations. Not all Chinese mask our intentions behind a thick fog to conceal our "ulterior motive". However, these anecdotes are nonetheless revealing of a hallmark of Chinese social interaction.

1. Chinese: my daughter is going to the States to study. I am afraid she won't be able to find appropriate housing. I am really worried.

American: don't worry. There are plenty of good options. She will find a way t0 manage.

Hidden Message: can my daughter stay at your place first?

2. Chinese client: It has been great working with you. We will pay the fee in 2 installments.  You will receive the first next week.

North American vendor: It has been great working with you too. Thank you!

Hidden Message: the second installment depends on how much you kickback.

3. Chinese wife: all my friends have LV bags. I don't like to be so extravagant though.

Foreign husband: that's why I love you.

Hidden message: you should reward my unmaterialistic nature by getting me an LV bag.

4. Chinese entrepreneur: this is my killer idea. I'd appreciate your honest feedback.

Foreign entrepreneur: how do you differentiate your product? You will probably fail if you launch as it is.

Hidden Message: I mean face-giving honesty rather than the ugly truth.

It could take a while to develop awareness for the culture of subtle hints. However, you might find the ultimate answer to handling these situations are what your first instincts tell you. As the great saying goes, 大智若愚/dà zhì ruò yú/to know is to not know.
