Following the Chinese space program’s successful mission to the far side of the moon in January, China has announced plans to send a probe to Mars.

According to the chief designer of China’s lunar exploration program, Wu Weiren, a Mars mission is the natural next step for China’s space program.

Although China was a latecomer to the global space race, the nation’s space program has made rapid advances over the past 60 years.

The program’s accomplishments include landing a rover on the moon in 2013 as well as launching two space labs into Earth’s orbit.

In preparation for the Mars mission, China has opened a $22.3 million simulation base in Qinghai’s Qaidam basin.

The Qaidam basin is the highest desert on Earth.

Its yardang landforms and hyper-arid environment make it one of the few places on this planet that resemble the Martian surface.

China also plans to send an additional probe to the moon to collect samples from the lunar surface.
