Italian officials are meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Rome to discuss an agreement regarding Italy’s involvement in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The non-binding memorandum of understanding, expected to be signed on Saturday,

would make Italy the first of the G7 nations to back the Chinese government’s ambitious infrastructure project.

The aim of the BRI is to construct a massive trade network connecting Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Under a deal with the Italian government, Beijing would invest in ports where Chinese goods could be imported to Europe.

Some Chinese goods would be manufactured within Italy to meet EU standards.

A deal may also allow the Chinese tech company Huawei to operate a 5G network in Italy.

Italy’s Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, has praised the potential agreement as an opportunity to increase Italian exports to China.

A Chinese delegation of over 200 people is accompanying President Xi in Rome, where the Italian government has provided a lavish welcome.
