John: Hey, you’re listening to ChinesePod. We’re in the kitchen today. This is an Intermediate lesson. My name is John.

Jenny: 大家好,我是Jenny

JohnJenny we are in the kitchen, right?

Jenny: 对,我们在厨房,然后今天要 谈一下厨房的  工具

John: OK let me review two very important words there, so the word for kitchen is

Jenny: 厨房,两个第二声

John: Two second tones, and now what’s in the kitchen?

Jenny: 工具, 工具

John: First tone, fourth tone, that means tool

Jenny:

John: Alright, we’re not actually going to hear the word tool in this dialogue, but we’re going to hear more specific words referring to types of tool in the kitchen, and specific types of knives and other things.

0.44 Jenny: 对,这些 词里面[??] 具这个词。

John: Yeah, you’ll hear half of the word tool, the ju4 part which specifically means tool.

Jenny:

John: Now what is the situation in the dialogue?

1.00

Jenny: [??]今天有三一个 house warming, __ my house warming __有人搬了新家

John: OK. so some friends came to see the new place.

Jenny: 朋友去看他的新家然后他们 [??   ]新房子里面,新厨房里面做菜。

John: OK, so they are going to cook in the new kitchen.

Jenny:

John: That’s very natural lots of Chinese people when they get together they eat, right?

Jenny: 对,可是 John, you’re ruin your new kitchen.

John: Right, ready for the dialogue now, here we go.

1.30

DIALOGUE

2.11

John: OK, so right in the beginning we see that people are here to see the new home right?

Jenny: 对啊,来看你们的新家然后带了很多菜,这些几个很好的客人啊

John: So they brought vegetables to the new home, groceries or what?

Jenny: Ah, groceries,菜

John: Not vegetables

Jenny: 没错,菜不一定就是素菜 vegetables

John: So like eggs and stuff?

Jenny: 肉啊,蛋阿,各种各样都 [ri? ]

John: So they just did their grocery shopping and brought it to the home. Is that normal?

Jenny: 我觉得不是很 normal

John: Alrightso close friends doing some work but it is time to eat, right?

2.50

Jenny: 对,那他买了好多菜,他这个般新家的朋友很高兴啊,他说天天在外面吃饭,我都吃腻了,所以 我今天说,吃腻了。

John: So eating out every day, so now I’ve already..

Jenny: 吃腻了, 吃腻了

John: So we have this word “ni4” fourth tone, added after the verb

Jenny: 吃,吃腻了

John: And that means, eat something to the point that you are sick of it

Jenny: 对,overdose la

John: OK

Jenny: 那么我们[还能 ]把这个腻方在其它些东西的后面

John: OK, so we can put ni4 after other verbs and have the same effect

3.26

Jenny: 是的,比如说,哎呀,我们老是看”Star Wars”每一个Star Wars都看过好几十遍我都看腻了

John: Alright, seen Star Wars dozens of time till sick of watching it.

Jenny:对,看腻了,或者说,我们老是听JohnJenny 讲课都听腻了。

John: OK. sick of hearing them.

Jenny: 对,然后那你可以说经常周末到同一个地方去玩儿都玩儿腻了。

John: OK, sick of playing that way…

Jenny: haha, having fun that way

John: Hanging out there

Jenny: 对,所以,吃腻了,看腻了,听腻了,玩儿腻了,是最常用的。

John: OK, so those are all very common.

Jenny:

John: Alright, so we are in the kitchen, what’s the deal in the kitchen.

4.16

Jenny: [ ? ]这个厨房不太 ready 因为还没收拾,收拾

John: Alright, 收拾, that’s first tone, neutral tone, that kind  means tidy up, right?

4.30

Jenny: 是的,收拾那比如说要[成里??]一下,然后要打扫一下就是弄得很干净

John: OK, so it’s both organizing it but also cleaning a bit

Jenny: 对,对。

John: For example, after a meal you have to put stuff away but you also have to wipe down the table

Profile picture
paulinurus

4.46

Jenny: 没错 John[??]收拾一下

John: OK, so they need to 收拾 the whole kitchen

Jenny:嗯,对,但是呢号像没什么东西好收拾因为没什么厨具和餐具,厨具和餐具。

John: Alright, so there’s the 具 right?

5.02

Jenny: 嗯,[????]厨房里很有很多工具,也没有厨具和餐具。

John: OK, so two different types of tools, the first type is

Jenny: 厨具,厨房的厨。。

John: Ah, 厨房的厨 and we know 房 is room, so 厨房 basically means “kitchen” a?

Jenny: 对,这儿 厨具 就是。。你在厨房的做菜,做菜的时候就到用的一些工具。

John: Cooking tools, cooking utensils, they are both..

Jenny: 厨具

John: chu2 second tone, ju4 forth tone, and then what other kinds of tools?

Jenny: 餐具,餐具

John: can1, this is like can1ting1

Jenny: 嗯,对,或者早餐 对巴breakfast

John: OK, referring to eating, so eating tools!

Jenny: 嗯,那么就是在西方,刀,叉 fork and knife 然后在东方餐具就是筷子,碗啦,这些东西。

John:So, in China can1ju4 is not only knife and fork, but also chopsticks and bowls, and plates?

Jenny: 对的,对的,盘子就是餐具。

John:So you might say tableware or something like that.

6.18

Jenny: [??]吃饭的时候要用的工具

John:OK got it!

Jenny: 好,那么我们后来找]到了一个厨具,是一个锅,一个锅

John:They found one cooking utensil and it is the wok, correct?

Jenny:guo 第一声

John: First tone, so of course what do you do with a wok

Jenny: 要朝菜可用锅,炒菜

John: Chao3 refers to stir fry right?

6.50

Jenny: 对的,那么这个几个菜不[?]是素菜,不[?]是 vegetables [????]

John: Any dishes or food

Jenny: 对

John: OK, and what is missing from the kitchen

Jenny: 没有菜刀,没有菜刀

John: So 菜刀 is like a vegetable knife, or a food knife?

7.20

Jenny: A food knife, 那在中国呢如果你说菜刀, 一般我们决会想象一种大的刀[????] [???]可怜公布可能

John:Yeah, it’s true the typical Chinese kitchen knife is kind of scary. It looks like a cleaver

Jenny:[???]大大的 [??]metal 很大的

John:It’s big, it’s a lot bigger than what we normally think of needing in the West

Jenny:但是 这种大的菜刀在中国呢很[??]一般我们切素菜啊,切肉啊,都会用这个大的菜刀。

John:So this is very common in a Chinese kitchen, we call a Chinese kitchen knife 菜刀 and it is a lot bigger than you might expect.

John: Alright, then what else is missing from the kitchen?

Jenny: 还有铲子和勺子,铲子和勺子,

John:chan3zi, third tone and neutral, does that mean shovel?

8.05

Jenny: 阿是的,它可以是一个shovel [??] 铲雪对巴。在这里厨房的铲子就是少太用的

John: So, it’s a cooking shovel, otherwise it is known as a spatula

Jenny: 一把铲子,那后面还有一个勺子,勺子。

John:OK, the smaller ones are for eating soup, but they can be bigger?

Jenny:可以的,就是我们盛汤的时候用的

John: Ah, for dishing out soup would be a ladle

8.38

whoah ! hehe, were you having us all on mate? Looks like you've done a sterling job on this and only have a few question marks. So as I suspected you do follow most of it. Don't worry too much about the little bits you miss...we all miss stuff. Well done mate. I haven't listened to this lesson yet but I will try and look at your question marks when I get home tonight and see if there's any suggestions I can come up with. Jiayou !

0:44 都有。。can't hear the 的 after it though [doesn't mean it isn't there though, hehe ]

00:53s [you have it marked as 1m] 其实今天。。semi-house warming

Profile picture
bababardwan

here are my suggestions mate. Obviously take them with a grain of salt, hehe:

00:14s 厨房里的

00:46s “具”这个字

00:56s 其实今天有一点像一个house warming...semi house warming,就是。。

1m06s 对,朋友。。。。然后他们要在新。。

1m17s you might be right with "对,可是 John"..but I'm not sure if "John" might actually be "这样“..have another listen and see what you reckon.

2m16s 然后他带了。。

2m19s..you may be right, but it doesn't sound quite right to me. I'm not too sure either but I think it could be either 这就是个很好。。。 or 就这些个很好. I favour the former because grammatically that feels better to me, but I'm not certain that's what I'm hearing.

Profile picture
bababardwan

2m30s 蔬菜

2m35s ..agree it's not too clear, but you'd expect 是 here and I think you can just make that out.

2m55s you have "我都吃腻了"...I cant here the 我 there

2m57s sounds like 今天自已做, but I would have more expected 今天自己做 【做 not 说】,我都吃腻了

3m19s 还能 sounds right to me

3m20s 放在其他一些动词的后面

Profile picture
bababardwan

4m16s 噢,现在这个厨房还不太。。

4m30s 收拾呢 【 agree it sounds perhaps more like 那 which I think could also make sense here, but 呢 I think would be more common in this context..not sure though mate, just something worth checking] 就是说要整理一下,然后也要打扫。。

4m46 没错,这要吃晚饭

Profile picture
bababardwan

4m53s 但是呢好像

5m02s 嗯,就是我们前面说

ok, well I'm gonna leave it there for now mate. If no-one else comes along to finish helping I'll try and have another look later. Once again, I'm impressed with what a good job you've done. You definitely underestimate yourself. Well done. Jiayou ! :)

This looks like an excellent job, paulinurus. I only went over the first 3 or 4 minutes and didn't find anything bababardwan hadn't noticed, with the exception of one correction to a 把 vs 吧 situation. I think the sentence is:

Jenny: 我觉得不是很normal (((吧)))。

I hope someone will correct me immediately if I am wrong here.

If I have time tomorrow, I'll look over the last part of your transcript if someone hasn't already gotten to it.

Later,

Here's the rest of the transcript. I've left out a little bit of the ending where they were just jesting about sandwich.

I think next time, I'd leave out John's English dialogue and just do Jenny's Chinese dialogue, since we can understand John in the podcast.

 8.38

Jenny:  对,也是勺子

JohnSecond  tone, neutral tone right?

 Jenny:  对,铲子和勺子。 好,那刚刚讲到了菜刀啊,然后你们听到一把水果刀,水果刀。

John: OK, shui guo dao, this is fruit knife right?

Jenny:  对,那水果刀就是比较小的啦

John: Alright, you’ve  been using these measure words to talk about knives, and we’ve been skipping over, let’s take a look at it now

Jenny: 好,把,一把刀,一把刀

John: OK  so that’s third tone, frequently used for things with handles

Jenny:  对,这是刚刚说到的铲子,刀子,两词都这个把

John: So including cai dao, but for guo we use ge  right?

Jenny: 对,锅的两词是个,一个锅,然后这种[?]比如一把刀,然后一把餐子,然后一把勺子

John: OK, the knives are definitely yi ba dao  but what do you do with shui guo dao

Jenny: 那对话里面呢他们没有菜刀所以要用水果刀切菜,切菜

John: Qie cai means cut up vegetables right?

Jenny: 对对

John: So qie, what tone is that?

Jenny: 第一声

John: OK, first tone

Jenny: 嗯,好,那[出?]了这些厨具那我们还要铲子对吧

John: OK now we are done with the cooking utensils and are now moving on to the table ware

10.08

Jenny: 是的,那么这个刚搬新家人啊他家里好多东西还在箱子里面,还在箱子里

John: So, xiang zi refers to a box right?

Jenny: 对,那他说我箱子里有碗筷,有碗筷

John: OK so in the box I have

Jenny: 碗筷

John: So bowl and chopsticks?

Jenny: 是的,这个就是中国人最基本的餐具

John: The most fundamental eating utensils are the bowl and chopsticks, and there is a word meaning bowl and chopsticks

Jenny: 碗筷,碗这是一个 bowl 一碗 饭,那筷就是筷子,你会用筷子吗?

John: Hui, so wan kuai is third tone, forth tone right?

Jenny: 是的,好,那我们现在有了厨具也有了餐具可是什么调料都没有,什么调料都没有

John: OK now before we get to this structure we’re talking about what not being there?

Jenny: 调料,第二声第四声

Johntiao liao, 2nd  4th  that means seasoning. So what are some examples of tiao liao?

Jenny: 比如在西方肯定有 salt and pepper,盐和胡椒粉,然后在中国那我们觉得最重要的是,油啊,盐啊,酱油啊,醋啊,这种种

John: So, oil, salt

Jenny: soya sauce, 还有醋 cu, vinegar

John: OK So those are all basic tiao liao

Jenny: 对,都是调料

John: OK, so what is that sentence again?

Jenny: 可是什么调料都没有,什么调料都没有

John: It’s not just mei you, but shen me dou. We don’t have any seasoning at all, So what do they decide to do?

Jenny: 这个住人说 要不做三明治吧,要不做三明治吧

JohnAh, the simple sandwich a?

Jenny: 嗯,三明治

John: OK, so that’s 3rd, 2nd, and 4th. But there is a special word that introduces this suggestion, what was it?

Jenny: 要不,要不

John4th tone and neutral. What does this mean?

Jenny: 要不, 就是我们为什么不,我们为什么不做三明治呢

John: OK, we know the situation so in that case, why don’t we do this. So, we’re offering an alternative suggestion after something else has been shot down for whatever reason

Jenny: 因为他们什么调料都没有所以可能没办炒菜,那要不做三明治吧

John: OK. so you hear yao bu then you’re going to hear a suggestion after, right? And it is not really related to bu yao

Jenny: 完全不一样意思啊

John: And the, I’ve got to ask you a quick question here, you notice when they realize they don’t have anything they resort to the sandwich

Jenny: 要不错三明治吧

JohnIn Chinese psychology is the sandwich an inferior kind of food

Jenny: 简单, simple yes, inferior no

It again didn't take all the text, even though I copied the text page by page (without the page breaks)

John: Hui4, so wan3 kuai4 is third tone, forth tone right?

Jenny: 是的,好,那我们现在有了厨具也有了餐具可是什么调料都没有,什么调料都没有

John: OK now before we get to this structure we’re talking about what not being there?

Jenny: 调料,第二声第四声

Johntiao2 liao4, 2nd  4th  that means seasoning. So what are some examples of tiao liao?

Jenny: 比如在西方肯定有 salt and pepper,盐和胡椒粉,然后在中国那我们觉得最重要的是,油啊,盐啊,酱油啊,醋啊,这种种

John: So, oil, salt

Jenny: soya sauce, 还有醋 cu, vinegar

John: OK So those are all basic tiao liao

Jenny: 对,都是调料

John: OK, so what is that sentence again?

Jenny: 可是什么调料都没有,什么调料都没有

John: It’s not just mei you, but shen me dou.

Jenny: 很可怜啊,一辆调料都没有。

John: We don’t have any seasoning at all, So what do they decide to do?

Jenny: 这个[住?]人说 要不做三明治吧,要不做三明治吧

John: OK. so you hear yao4bu then you’re going to hear a suggestion after, right? And it is not really related to bu4yao4

Jenny: 完全不一样意思啊

JohnAlright, totally different. Alright, got it, so anything else we need to know before we listen to the dialogue again?

Jenny: 我们已经讲了很多啦,我觉得可以在听一遍对话

13.28

DIALOGUE

14.12

Jenny:好了今天我们学了很多厨房的工具,有厨具和有餐具

John: So cooking utensils and table ware. Lets review the table ware first.

Jenny: 餐具,那我们听到了碗筷,碗筷

John: Bowl and chopsticks

Jenny: 对,然后西方的刀叉

John: Knife and fork

Jenny:然后厨具的话呢东西就挺多大有锅,锅子

John: A wok and you can add zi in the end

Jenny: 可以的,锅子,然后有刀,菜刀和水果刀

John: OK, so two different types of knives and the measure word for knives is

Jenny: 把,一把

John: And there is another word that use the measure word ba, right?

Jenny: 对,还有两辆东西,铲子和勺子,一把铲子,一把勺子

JohnOK the shovel and the ladle

Jenny: 那么后面我们还听到了调料对把,这个很重要 seasoning

John: And the, I’ve got to ask you a quick question here, you notice when they realize they don’t have anything they resort to the sandwich

Jenny: 要不错三明治吧

JohnIn Chinese psychology is the sandwich an inferior kind of food

Jenny: 简单, simple yes, inferior no

paul,

I'm about to duck off so haven't had a chance to listen, but I just noticed in a quick squizz this bit:

John: We don’t have any seasoning at all, So what do they decide to do?

Jenny: 这个[住?]人说 要不做三明治吧,要不做三明治吧

and I'm thinking from the context of this sentence it's likely to be 主人
