John: Hi, this is an intermediate lesson on Chinesepod. I’m John.

Jenny

John: And so today we have a very Chinese situation here.

Jenny:

John:

Jenny: 对

John: So, that’s just like, um, matchmaking activity?

John: So, it’s the social activity, kind of like a dating thing, but it’s serious dating.

John: Marriage is the goal.

John: OK, 相亲, two first tones, right?

Jenny: 没错

John: Alright, but this one is in a park

Jenny:

John: So, it’s the actual young peoples’ agents, eh?

Jenny: 对

John: Their parents are representing them in the park

Jenny: 没错

John: So this is an actual real thing, right?

John: So, these parents are trying to find mates for their children in the park all weekend long?

Jenny:

John: So, there’s like con-artists?

Jenny:

John: OK, so anyway, in the beginning we have a guy, ah, he seems to be a foreigner and he kind of wanders into the park, eh?

John: Yeah and we want to point this out because it ends in a 吗

John: Right, so there’s a 什么

Jenny: 嗯

John: And then a 吗

John: So, if it’s a 吗 question it’s a yes/no question

John: Yes, so is there some activity today?

Jenny: 对

John: He’s not sure if there is an activity

Jenny:

John: Now, if he was sure there was an activity and he wanted to know what activity it was, he could ask…

Jenny:

John: Right, but he’s not sure there’s an activity, so he adds a 吗,is there some activity today.

那就是一个很简单的yes or no question

John: Right, OK

John: So, 帮子女

Jenny: 嗯

John: What is 子女

Jenny:

John: OK, so their kids

Jenny:

John:

。。的结构

John: OK, so they’re helping their kids to come 相亲. So this 相亲 means finding mates for them

Jenny: 嗯

John: Is that right?

Jenny: 对,就是finding potential marriage material

John: OK, got it.

John: OK, so the kids are too busy, they don’t have time to make friends?

John: What? What do you mean?

Jenny:

John: So, 交朋友,can mean to make friends, just regular friends

Jenny: 嗯

John: But here in this circumstance it’s pretty clear that they mean boyfriend and girlfriend.

John: So they might be asking do you have a boyfriend or girlfriend

Jenny: 对

John: OK, yeah that’s true. This 朋友 can be a little bit, uh, confusing. You’ve got to look at the context.

John: OK, so they’re really concerned with 学历

Jenny: 嗯

John: So, 学,that’s like “study”, right?
