1/6 - Takeaway Favourites

There's a shock moment in this new cookery show when presenter Ching- He Huang reveals the quantities of fat, sugar and salt in the average Chinese takeaway meal. It's not a pretty sight. In fact, it may put you off the whole idea of takeaways for some time. And that would suit the tirelessly chirpy Ms Huang nicely because she wants to show us how easy it is to create takeaway favourites in our own kitchens. Her healthier versions of chicken chow mein and beef in oyster sauce look fabulous and, yes, dead easy. So easy that we see Britain's women's rowing captain cook them, too, just so we know there's nothing to it. It's all very jolly, and after half an hour with Huang, you'll be itching to throw away that flyer from the Golden Dragon and get to wok.

I am sure that you already stumbled upon the BBC China website long ago. Nevertheless, I find it's an indispensable. Apart from news in Chinese (good practice for Intermediate/Advanced-students), they also provide material for learners of English (and a very small "Learn Chinese" section that's even insufficient for tourists). But these podcasts (they come with a transscript), vocabulary tests and interesting as well as varied articles about the UK can be used in the reverse way. If you already have an Intermediate knowledge of Chinese, you can greatly profit from them, learn Chengyu, news vocab and informal expressions in Mandarin (plus some British slang). The presenters speak quick but clear putonghua. The interaction between them can be a bit awkward, but that does not affect the quality.

I hope you can draw profit from sections like 英语教学 and 英国生活.

So this bbc presenter is learning Chinese around here.

I quite enjoyed his interview with Ken (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/p002m3ps at appr. 02:19)

I had doubts on Ken's answer that Chinese (Mandarin) is the number one language in terms of the number of (nativ) speakers, but it's backed by this wikipedia article:
