Welcome to this new beta group. It's very exclusive.
This is pretty cool.
There's a new group called Mac users of ChinesePod; come and sign up if you're interested, and I'll try to remember to admit new members! (Note to ChinesePod: could you make admitting new members require less than, oh, the 20 or 30 clicks it now seems to take?).
I hope the group can provide an easy-to-search resource for Mac users. As an example, I seem to post details about how to type pinyin every six months or so, and now maybe things can be less confusing for new users.
Minor question: my subscription expires again in a couple of weeks, and I won't renew for a few weeks because I'll be traveling. Can non-subscribers still serve as gatekeepers? Can I give someone else the ability to do that?
Anyone in houston would like to create a chinese study group?
There really needs to be some pruning or at least some easier way to look for groups you like. There are tons of doubles (something like four different "lesbian in China" groups) and many groups with one member and no posts (many of which are named things like "test group").
It seems to me that groups are supposed to fill the niche of sub-forums, but they don't really seem to be working too well. Nobody really knows how to use them and often posts relevant to a group is posted outside of it. I don't really use the feature at all, really, except for replying to posts that are already in groups (for which I have to join the grou itself, making me sometimes not bother to reply).
I know a lot is happening to the community section these days, so maybe there's a reworking of the group system already planned? If not, maybe there ought to be. Or at least, as I said, a pruning.
(I suggest standardizing a number of groups and making them behave more like subforums, so that all posts need to be in a group (with a "general" catch-all group, of course). The open-source forum system Vanilla (http://vanillaforums.org/discussions) could serve as an inspiration. It has a great way of using categories while still showing all discussions on the same page, so you don't fracture the community and have empty forums just laying around.)
Hello, lurking for a long time, thought I'd pop my head up and add something.
So, I was a reading of a pretty interesting technique to help build understanding of different "families" of words using degrees of distinctions. Using a dictionary to do this is pretty tedious (and probably not accurate as far as actual usage), so I thought I'd throw a post up and see if people wanted to contribute (I say this not yet having a contribution...yes, I know, lame).
The idea is to add words in an array of degrees of intensity, approval, disapproval, weight, or any other characteristic using the "minimum," "average," and "maximum" of that group or family. A few examples might be (in English):
creek, stream, river
pebble, rock, boulder
big, huge, gargantuan
dislike, hate, detest
pink, red, scarlet,
etc.
I'll try to add some some more later (in Chinese, of course).
What about it? Know any?
'Posts keep disappearing before they are posted. Just as you are getting near the end... gone. This is still happening today.'
I posted this three weeks ago, after suffering in silence for a few more weeks. It is still happening today. Isn't it time this bug was fixed?
And while we are at it, can the default group when making a post be changed to General Discussion? The current system is impeding discussion.
