I'm curious in getting some feedback from people who have studied both pinyin and bopomofo for learning Chinese.  I recently picked up bopomofo to try and force myself out of some bad pronunciation habits I had when reading english letters in pinyin.

In my opinion, I find that studying bopomofo really helps in understanding the full vocal components of Chinese words.  Of course pinyin is still awesome for picking up pronunciation quickly, but I really think bopomofo helps you fine tune it and get as close to natural speech as possible.

Just throwing this out there to get some ideas, and see if anyone experienced in both can tell me if I am wasting my time or not.

I put together some small training excercises for myself that worked well and allowed me to pick it up in 3 weeks with only half an hour a day.  If anyone is interested I'd be happy to share.

Just subscribed today! I'm really excited because I've been listening to these podcasts a lot lately, but never had the chance to subscribe. I'm glad I did!

Ok, so I just got back from living in Taiwan for two years (and just like Amber, I'm going to have to adjust my 說法 a little bit. Ok.. maybe more than just a little bit). But as you know in Taiwan, they only use traditional characters (繁體字。 哈哈) I'm going to continue studying Chinese, but I know that studying simplified characters will be a lot more advantageous. I have a little over 2,000 characters memorized, and I'm trying to find out the tips and tricks of how to recognize simplified characters with a traditional character background. Does anyone have any similar experiences? Or is it just 'hey, just get used it to it!' type deal? Let me know!

Hey all, not sure how useful this will be to anyone out there, but I figured I'd post it just in case.  It's a collection of about 680 flashcards I've created using only bopomofo, the character (traditional) and a simple English definition.

http://ncincott.tripod.com/characters.zip

After searching high and low on the internet for some good learning materials using only bopomofo, I gave up and just made my own.  It's a work in progress so I'll try and keep it updated.  It's designed to fit about 6 cards on a paper to print out and take with you.  I fold them along the center line to hide the answers.

This random question seems to qualify as drivel and, for the siniphiles here, is probably an elementary question.  Still, I met an older Taiwanese man who told me that many of the people now living in Fujian originally fled from Luoyang (洛阳)and that an older name for 闽南语 is 河洛语.  Also, he says that some Taiwanese still call their patois 河洛语。 Also, similarly to Cantonese, he claimed that some poetry recited in Taiwanese sounds better because, similar to Cantonese, many ancient sounds are preserved in 闽南语。

A quick search on the web turned up this website, which confirms the correctness of the alternative name.  However, I couldn't confirm the origin of the name.  Has anyone ever heard of this?  No big deal, just curious, neverending quest for knowledge, etc.  This is

Google has added Street View in Taipei! It still seems kind of limited; hopefully the add more streets later, but I've been waiting for this for a long time. I knew it was coming because the google cam has been spotted around Taipei and Google地圖 has been busy with their "在台北最愛的地方" series with various Taiwanese 藝人.

I entered my 2nd speech contest as a way to force me to focus on improving my fluency and pronunciation.

Take a look at me here.  I'm the American with the sun glasses and hat.

Chinese Podders, I could use your support on this one.  Come take a look and tell me what you think of entering speech contests as a learning tool.
