Facebook's languages now include: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Japanese and Korean.

Surely Chinese will be next?

I think Korean was only added today, I don't think it was there yesterday.

I had been using Chinese pera-kun and finding it very helpful. Unfortunatly it does not seem to be compatible with the new version of firefox. Can anyone recommend any other good translations plugins?

There's a really good article in the NYtimes about a recent revamping of English translations of standard Chinese dishes in Beijing restaurants.  It's interesting to read about the reasoning behind some of translations.  I've gotta try 'Chicken without sexual life'...

Hi my lovelies

I've bought this computer game which is final fantasy 6 but (it should be) in simplified chinese.

 Can anyone can confirm this? I recognise a few characters but with the help of http://www.chinese-tools.com/tools/mouse.html and Nj stars Chinese input word processor (amazing tool - free download from http://www.njstar.com/cms/download) I was planning on translating bits here and there and getting the "jist" as it were.

As I've just shared two tools with the community (ok you probably already had them :P ) and with the kindness of some fluent lad or lass could you confirm it's simplified chinese...wouldn't want to get half way through the game with my laptop open on the mouse input web page, various notepads and dictionaries scrawled across my desk to find out i'm translating chinese characters which are in fact being used by the japanese language XD

Much luv

Richi x

P.s pic is quite small here but if you go the direct link it's a bit bigger...also if you could point me in the direction of more chinese computer games that i can buy/download (prefereably with speaking in) I'd love you forever

Hello!

Do you know Lingoes? Lingoes is a software which includes  dictionaries and text translation. I have just started to use this software, and I think it very useful.

Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, English, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Thai, Urdu and Vietnamese translations of a relay poem inspired by the Earth and Space  http://www.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/sp/poem/index.html

this being a joint project of NHK World Radio Japan and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the majority of contributions are by Japanese (poets, and people from the general public).  one contribution is by award-winning Chinese poet and translator 田原; i'm not sure which language he wrote in for this.  the last two of the 26 poems will be added soon to complete the work.

i can't tell how good the Chinese translations are.  if anyone can give me feedback on that i'd really appreciate it.  as we all know poetry is very difficult to translate!

though i can't read them, the Arabic (Persian, Urdu also) and Bengali scripts are particularly beautiful to look at.  too bad they couldn't pick a nicer typeface for the Roman-letter languages.

to see the Japanese, visit JAXA's site and while you're there  take a look at the Space Poem Chain Gallery--kind of nice.

have a nice weekend all!

You can win money off Chinese tea by translating the photo caption on this website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/33274525@N05/3482999163/

Anyone know the answer? :)

Thought you guys might find this interesting:

always a step ahead of other British papers in terms of media, the UK's Guardian is now providing a Chinese translation of its articles that pertain to China.

Might be of some use to you advanced readers, or for those us of less skill who just want to pick out some useful vocab. All the translated articles are provided in both Chinese and English

Enjoy!

For some while I've followed the fail blog site and the subsite that  deals with translation issues.   this is often amusing but also educational as quite frequently the translation issues  are English translations of Chinese signs.   As for example this one:

http://failblog.org/2009/08/15/lightswitch-fail/

The translation of 天花灯  as smallpox light seems obvious when looked up in MDBG as it lists the following definition

天花  = Smallpox / ceiling

So I can read the intended translation as "ceiling light"

However if I look up 花灯  I get

花灯  = coloured light

So maybe the Translation is "day coloured light"  or "day light" given the context.

Is this because of the translations in the dictionary I am using?  It is just that it seems nuclear to me how I would ensure I understand the intended meaning  and  how two readers would  be sure they were thinking the same.  In English the spaces between the words mark the boundary between the words but Chinese uses no spaces to define the gap.

For example if I write goatherding  when I mean waiting for the noise of a lady ringing a bell before leaving  I would came confusion.

I'm sure this is a confusion every English speaker approaching Chinese encounters but any insights into how I learn to  avoid these pitfalls would be welcome. I suspect the answer will be experience. . .
