Does anyone know what tahini (sesame paste) is in Chinese? Both pinyin and hanyu would be helpful, if possible.

Thanks!

Eric

Hi all, I’m starting to use this group to post recipes. The goal is to learn some recipe, cooking, and food vocab.  If you baidu the name of your favourite dish along with (shípŭ, recipe) or 做法 (zuòfă, method) you will come up with a lot of recipes.  (Pinyin works just fine in Baidu as well, I’ve just discovered – it takes the pinyin and gives you suggestions in characters.) Feel free to add corrections/suggestions both to the recipe or the Chinese.

蕃茄炒蛋 shípŭ fānqiéchăodàn

,鸡蛋, -3蕃茄,,胡椒

yoú4 jīdàn2-3 fānqiéyánhújiāo

cooking oil, 4 eggs, 2-3 tomatoes, salt, pepper

鸡蛋 打散, 蕃茄 切片 (有些人先去蕃茄皮但是我觉得太麻烦)

jiāng jīdàn dăsànbă fānqié qiēpiàn (yoŭxiē rén xiān qù fānqié pídànshì wŏ juéde tài máfan)

scramble the eggs and slice the tomatoes (some peel them, but I think it’s too much trouble)

锅热,放两汤勺油,,鸡蛋炒一下到3/4熟的就乘出

guōrè,fàng liăng tāngsháo yoúyoúrèfàng jīdànchăo yīxià dào 3/4 shúde jiù chéngchū

Heat your wok/pan, then heat 2 tbs oil. Add the eggs and cook til ¾ done, then remove from pan.

在加一点油, 入蕃茄, 炒一炒到香软的. 加鸡蛋,一起拌炒.加一点盐,胡椒

zài jiā yīdiăn yoúrù fānqiéchăoyīchăo dào xiāng ruăn de jiā jīdàn, yìqĭ bànchăojiā yīdiăn yánhújiāo.

Add a bit more oil if needed, then the tomateos, cook the tomatoes til they are soft and fragrant. Add the eggs to the tomatoes and stir everything together, then add salt and pepper.

This page has many tips and more elaborate recipes for scrambled eggs and tomatoes.

Would this be the correct way to say, "I want one spring roll" at a restaurant?

spring roll (I can't find the characters for spring roll!)

Is the first part of the sentence correct? Pretend that the characters for spring roll is after 个!

I am interested in (the use of) clover (三叶草 san1ye4cao3) in the Chinese kitchen: is there anyone that can tell me a bit more about this vegetable? How do you prepare it? Is it often used in Chinese dishes? I asked 4 Chinese ladies and they did not have a clue. I thought I give it a shot here.

Thx. :-)

Would anyone be interested in meeting up for dinner in Chinatown at some point over the next 2 or 3 weeks? There's this really nice sichuan restaurant we could go to, or we could all suggest some places and vote on our preferences and then all hook up at the place and enjoy some good food and alcohol.

I think it would be good to meet people in the area face-to-face because we're all here for the same purpose of learning Chinese for one reason or another. So it might be good to get to know each other a little more so that we might be able to do language exchanges and learn together.. or something like that anyway.

How about we record the dominant word for potato in as many regions of greater China as possible?  And any interesting related facts?  We will all at some stage need to order a plate of shredded potato!

I will start with Yunnan - can any poddies help with the accepted term in other areas?

云南 Yunnan 洋芋 yáng yù.   Note: 土豆 tǔdòu is understood but rarely used in the capital.  Outside the capital 土豆 is not used at all. To further complicate matters there are many areas outside the capital where people do not speak 普通话 - I am told that generally people can understand (learnt from TV) but do not speak it. I don't have any dialect words for potato.  Also, potato is usually eaten in the capital mashed (with varying amounts of chilli.)

I would be looking for a lesson containing the different kinds of meat, vegetables, mushrooms etc. which you commonly find on a Chinese menu. Beef, chicken, pork, lamb, mushroom, asparagus, broccoli could be some of the words.

Even though I searched the lessons I did not find one with all these words in it.

Can anybody help

Thanks

Martin
