Just watched this video on youtube, and loved it! Could someone please summarize the lyrics? (the subtitles are there, but there is far too many for me to look up)

Awesome video, and really reminds me of Beijing.

I hear he has a new CD out but I'm not sure if I'm going to like it.  I really love his old stuff but lately he's just getting too cutesy.

My favorite album of his is Black Tangerine 黑色柳丁 which has some great tracks and really creative rhythm.  I really haven't heard many artists like him, in Asia or US for that matter.

Here are some links to a few of his songs on Youtube Karoke style ;)

Rice Store

The misty March rain sways the south

You sit in an empty rice store

With one hand you grab an apple, with another you grab fate

Searching for your own fragrance

Beyond the window people buzz about

Gaze lost on damp streets

Your step streaks across the empty room

Time changes into mist

Lover you feel tomorrow has already come

Our boat is stopping at the pier

I can wash my hair clean, climb up the mast

It's as if our home were a vine of grapes, supported tenderly on a young branch

I also find Taiwanese pop music to be just as pleasant to listen to as mainland Chinese music. Jay Chou is actually Taiwanese isn't he? Anyway.. I am trying to work out who this band is and what other good songs they have.. may be what album this song is will also help. Would help to have English and Chinese name for the band. Obviously this song is called 你好吗.

我爱这个歌!

Yeh.. I know it's on the Secret (不能说秘密) album again. I just didn't realise how good this song was till I heard it a week or so ago. I had completely ignored it because I was enjoying the classical music so much.

I'm a huge fan of this Taiwanese group.  I kinda liken them to the Chinese version of Coldplay.  The lead singer's voice is pretty high, and some might mistake him for a girl... though, if you just listen to the music I think you'd like it!

Here are some of my favorites for you to check out:

小情歌 - great love song

爱人动物 - another great love song, if you look on youtube, you can find this one featured with "Juno" as a music video

小宇宙 - One of the first Sodagreen songs I heard, kinda rock'ish

我只在乎你(remake, live)

游乐 - I remember when I first heard this song I wasn't wild about it, but it grew on me (like a fungus!) Listen to it and you'll know what I mean, lol.

I've really enjoyed the two Newbie Lessons that use children's songs to teach vocabulary:  the "Colors Song," and the "Hair and Shoulders, Knees and Feet Song."  I've done a search for other lessons that also use such songs, but haven't come across them yet.  I would love to find more of these children's songs; they're easy to remember and would be a good way to interface with 'little Chinese friends.'

Understanding and Appreciative Friends (高山流水 gao shan liu shui)

Understanding and Appreciative Friends

During the Spring and Autumn Period(770-476B.C.).there was a man whose name was Yu Boya.  Yu boya famous music master at that time, having a good command of the temperament and superb skills in playing the musical instrument.  He was bright and eager to learn when he was young.  He had formally acknowledged several experts as his teachers, and his skills in playing the musical instrument had already reached a fairly high level.  But he still felt that he could not superbly express the various things which had deeply impressed him.  Knowing what was in his mind, his teacher took him to the penglai Island, a fabled abode of immortals, on the East China Sea by boat.  On the island, his teacher let him enjoy the natural scenarios and listen to the roaring of the great waves.  looking into the distance, Boya saw that the waves were turbulent and that the white breakers leapt skywards.  Sea birds were circling in the air, and their crying was very pleasant to the ear.  Trees were green and intriguing feeling welled up in his mind, as if he had heard the harmonious and charming music of nature.  He couldn't help taking his musical instrument and playing it .  He followed his inclinations while he was playing, and incorporated the beautiful nature with his music, thus reaching a realm of thought he had never experienced before.  Seeing this, the teacher said to him,''You have mastered the art of playing."

Once,on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, he was boating for sight-seeing.  The moon was bright and a cool breeze was blowing gently.  With myriads of thoughts welling up in his mind, he began to play the musical instrument.  The melodious music became more and more beautiful when a man on the bank shouted "bravo!"  Hearing the shouting,  Boya came out of the boat, and saw a woodcutter standing on the bank.  He knew that this man was keenly appreciative of his talents, because he understood his music.  He immediately invited the woodcutter to his boat and , full of zest, he played the musical instrument for him.  When Boya played a piece of music eulogizing the high mountains, the woodcutter said,"wonderful! The melody is as magnificent and dignified as Mount Tai which reaches to the sky!"  When he played a piece of music depicting the turbulent waves, the woodcutter said,"Wonderful! The melody is as vast and mighty as the great rivers!"Boya was excited, and said,"Bosom friend! You are really my bosom friend!"  That woodcutter was Zhong Ziqi.  Since then, they had been very good friends.

This story appears in The Works of Lie Zi.From this story, people have derived the set phrase "high mountain and running water" to refer to understanding and appreciative friends.  This set phrase is also used to refer to melodious music.

I believe that TANK is from the Taiwense band Fahrenheit. He has a great falsetto voice in this song. Be interested to know really what he is singing about in this song because I can't seem to find a full translation for this one.

The first part of the song title 三国 refers to "The Three Kingdoms" a period following the break-up of the Han (220-280). 恋 means to feel attached to/long for/love/.. So I can get a general idea of what the song is about but other than that I am uncertain.

Great song with a great melody and singing. This is a good example of western pop music meeting eastern pop music. Let me know what you think.. I love it :)

I've started a blog where I'm sharing some out-of-print reissues from Hong Kong of some old shidaiqu (時代曲)/ mando-pop songs from the 1930s-1960s.  I've found them a pretty good way to memorize vocabulary and an enjoyable way to listen to the spoken language.

I'm scanning the booklets also, so you'll have the lyrics, and about once a week I'm going to post translations and notes for a song.

anyone is free to come by and try it out- there's absolutely no charge and no hoops to jump through.  bear in mind that i've JUST started it, so there's not a ton of content yet, but if you check it once a week or so, there should be a steady stream of new stuff.

also- if anyone want's to offer their own translations of songs, I'd gladly accept submissions and give credit where credit is due.

-anthony.

Just curious if anyone on this site knows where you can get a guitar in Beijing.  Acoustic or electric, cheap or expensive, name-brand or no-name, doesn't matter.  I just want something to put my hands on, without going to Walmart for a kids' version of a guitar. So If nothing else, I would prefer it be a music store. Thanks for any suggestions.

Anyone else feel this way? No, it's not that "it's all mushy pop songs" or anything like that. It's just that any and all music sung in Chinese sounds like it's sung by Americans who have just learned the language and didn't care about pronounciation. It always sounds like they're mangling the Chinese language. I'm all "If you can't pronounce it properly, sing in a different language! You're just embarrassing yourself."

It's all because of the lack of tones, of course. Remove the tones from Chinese and it doesn't sound like Chinese. If you've heard someone speak Chinese with all the wrong tones, you know what I'm talking about. Anyone who sings in Chinese sounds like that to me.

Am I alone in this?
