Hi, I have a problem with the vocabulary manager. When I select on the 'Show' line a label that I have previously created (and applied to selected saved words), nothing appears on the screen except

'You currently have no words in your list'. Which of course is wrong.
It only works with a few labels. How can I fix the problem, to be able to enjoy the flashcards with less than 1,550 words?

I must admit I don't usually surf around the CPod site, I'm more of a listen on my iPod kinda learner.  However, today I decided to do some probing around the site and see what was available to me.  To be honest I am not overly satisfied with the way the site is laid out, nothing is too clear and the "resources" are lacking.

At the top of my list is the fact that there seems to be no central easy to find location for shared vocabulary sets.  I haven't even been able to figure out how to get someone else's shared vocabulary set!  If I'm just a helpless idiot someone please point me in the right direction.

I don't know if anyone will read this, but it's an analogy I've frequently used when describing vocabulary learning; a glass of ice water.

First, think of your brain as the glass.  It's an empty glass until you start to drop in ice cubes.  The ice cubes are vocabulary.  Now, over time the ice cubes will melt into water... we can think of the water as learned vocabulary.  Now, if you want to learn the vocabulary, you need to wait for the new vocab words to melt before you can drink it.  What this means is you need time for each word to melt... that is familiarity.  Only by spending time with words, using them and allowing them to sink in, do we eventually learn them.

Now, a glass is a container and can only hold a finite amount of liquid.  So, to, is our brain.  You can't simply throw in 900 new words, or in the case of our analogy... toss 900 ice cubes into the glass.  If you do that, only a handful will even make it in.  So, we have to go slowly, 慢慢来, in order for our words to 'melt'.  If you toss in more words while you're still learning others, then your glass is going to overflow and you're going to lose vocabulary.  The only thing you can do to learn faster, or make the cubes melt quicker, is to use the words in a variety of ways... be that in speaking, writing or in listening.  Anything but rote memorization.  The size of everyone's glass is different, of course.  Some can only handle 1 new word a week, some 1 a day, and some 30 a day.

I submit that learning vocabulary is a process, one that must be adhered to to ensure long-term retention.  I think we can all agree that short-term vocabulary retention is a real thing.  We've all probably had an event, test orsituation to prepare for in Chinese and have crammed some last-minute vocabulary.  Chances are, you forgot them.  But chances also are that if you used that vocabulary, you had a higher chance of retaining it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's no quick way to learn vocabulary, just better ways.  There are exceptions of course --I call them robots -- those who can memorize vocabulary after the first time they hear it.  If there was a way to become one of these, I already would have!

Here's hoping your glasses are full this Holiday season :)

Hello everyone,

I had a relatively good learning week! My technology problems seem to be solved right now, and I am back into a good grove. I have flashcards made for about 520 words and word combinations. Out of this, I have proficiency on about 339. I have acquisition on an additional 90 terms. The verbal part is going slower than the written part, but I am doing better on both areas. The past week, I had done the taxi conversation series and a couple of other lessons. I like the idea of an audio phrasebook, and I also like when the lessons are grouped together like that.

As I have stated in an earlier post, I have found a way to print flashcards. This has the benefits of being faster than writing, and being more accurate. For example, it took between 50 minutes and an hour and 15 minutes to do 15 flashcards using the handwriting method. Last night, I printed off 100 flashcards in about 3 and a half hours. What I do is I use ms paint, do print screen and set up a paper with 5 terms as if I were going to print them on a sheet of 8.5 X 11 paper. What I actually do is use packing tape and tape my flashcards to the paper, and feed the paper through the printer. It uses very little ink, and it never jams up. I use the same flashcards that I was using for the handwriting method, so there is no conflict there.

My greatest gains are in reading. I am at a point where I can read much of the newbie expansions. I would say that half the time (50%), I get the essential meaning of the sentence right. another 25%, I might understand all the terms, but my lack of knowledge of how the terms are actually used prevents me from understanding correctly what is being said. For the remaining 25%, I generally will not understand a word or two in the sentence, or flat out get the sentence wrong. Elementary level expansions are more difficult for me. I would say that 15% of the time, I am able to get the essential meaning of the sentence right. another 15% or so, I might understand all the terms, but my lack of knowledge of how the terms are actually used prevents me from understanding correctly what is being said. For the remaining 70%, I generally will not understand a word or two in the sentence, or flat out get the sentence wrong.

Much of my study time is spent going through the lessons trying to find terms and words that I don't know. I don't bother going through the newbie lessons doing this anymore because I might only find one or two unknown words. I currently do well doing elementary lessons, but I figure it is just a matter of time before I feel like I am panning for gold in my bathtub. I notice that in the community page, people build vocabulary lists. I also notice that I can set to share my vocabulary lists. Is there a way to find lists that others are sharing so that I can get words from them? I am guessing that there is such a way, but I havent figured it out yet.

Guess that is it for right now, below (hopefully) you will find two photos that will show my progress that I have had since joining Chinapod. In the first photo, I have a small stack. It was taken about a week or so after I started the chinese lessons. The Bottom photo was taken on the 3rd of this month. I guess I will be doing these updates on Thursday/Friday instead of Sunday as I am scheduled to work on the weekends for the time being.

Would it be possible to devise a vocabulary activity whereby students could match up all three words (Hanzi/PinYin/English)?

I find that I'm fine matching pinyin to English, but it's difficult to make the Hanzi symbols stick.

Hi all, I have a question regarding the different lesson levels here at Chinese Pod. I've been listening a lot to the newbie and elementary shows and I can understand most of the dialogue, but there are always new words and expressions to learn from them. My question is, approximately how big a vocabulary do you need to be able to go on to the intermediate level? Thanks!

Hello,

I am trying to export my vocabulary in .csv.

No problem in doing it, of course, but when I open the file in excel, the pinyn column is composed not by the very pinyn definition, but by a codification (i think utf) of them.

For instance: zàijiàn

How to fix it?

Thank you!

Regards,

Davide

Some interesting word formation in this week's Intermediate lesson - Amusement Park. The Tuttle Dictionary explains very well (for West brainers) how words are formed in the Chinese language, and that the way a word is formed tells you a lot about its meaning i.e. makes it easier to remember, i.e.  expands one's vocabulary i.e. for WB to understand EB better.

Six categories of word-formation (1) Compounding (2) Modification  (3) Verb+Object (4) Verb+Complementation (5) Suffixation (6)Idioms.

Categories 2 to 5 are  easiest to remember by knowing the components of a word. Unfortunately, for Categories 1 and 6, WB will just have to memorize as a chunk.

游乐园

yóulèyuán (C2)

[wander+happy+park] amusement park

 旋转木马

xuánzhuǎnmùmǎ (C2)

[revolve+turn+wooden+horse]carousel, merry-go-round

 刺激

cìjī (C1)

[irritate+excite] stimulating; thrilling; exciting

过山车

guòshānchē (C2)

[go across+mountain+car] rollercoaster

胆小鬼

dǎnxiǎoguǐ (6)

[brave+small+ghost] coward

胆小鬼 would be somewhat a perplexing word for WB. How could a brave small ghost be a coward?

大家好!

I was lately wondering about the features of the vocab section... I have to admit I never used it that much as I normally study vocab with pleco or - with pen and paper:)...

But why are we able to read every time we open the homepage that user... created a vocab set...

Great she/he did, but where is the use for others to know? I checked through some users profile..only on one profile I was able to find a vocab set above his groups list, but when I clicked it it was empty.

Same as once I read user... shared a vocab set, but when I clicked his profile I didn't see it.

Then I went to my vocab section looking for the feature to share one of my vocab sets, but I was not able to find...

As there is this "Latest Study Activity" list where I can see people creating vocab sets, I thought it must be possible to access them...like I see somebody created a set 'travel' and I think, -"Great, this is a topic I would love to brush up my vocab on...I am going to study her/his collection of words".

Am I right and just not able to find out how?

How can I share vocab sets?

Thanks,格桑

Hi,

Does anyone know how to create a new vocabulary set in vocabulary manager? I can create a new label, but importing my existing list of words into the new set label isn't clear.  Any step-by-step instructions are greatly appreciated.
