This group aims at a line-by-line approach to the Chinese classic 红楼梦. The novel is hereby understood to be a vehicle that leads to a deeper understanding of a more formal, (semi-) classic Chinese.
In the beginning the unit of discussion will be atomic in nature (sentence-level). An expected by-product are insights into Chinese literature and culture.
Meandering discussions that digress into grammar, ethymology, and history are more than welcome.

Regarding the translations: I personally do not really strive for nice English translations - as you mentioned someplace else, there are already good...
忽念及当日所有之女子I suddenly remember (念及) that day (当日) when there was a woman
当日not means that day，but " the old time"
所有之女子not means there was a woman, but "those girls "
suddenly I remember those girls in the old time...

Hi Andy,welcome to the group! Actually *my* own Chinese proficiency is basic at best.
Watch out for the comments of Changye because they provide the really interesting insights (and I am still waiting for derek to come back).
