January 08, 2008, 08:11 AMyes, taglish is funny too...in fact, anything with tagalog is downright hilarious to me. I actually don't know much about the fairness/lightness thing, but i'll just take a wild guess. I think it's probably similar to why the chinese prefer fair skin (as evidenced by all the skin-whitening products being advertised in singapore). Being dark-skinned is associated with being a commoner who works in the sun all day long..being rich and upper class means you get to sit inside all day, away from the sun. i think this was discussed in the chinesepod lesson about beauty..?

Yeah, it seems like every chinese person (from China) that I meet here seems to think Singapore is boring and small. While to an American like me, it's an exciting experience. Hearing Singlish for the first time was disorienting, but now that I'm used to it, I appreciate and love how quickly and humorously something can be expressed using Singlish.
