Since this is at the top of the comments, I'd like to leave a comment for the benefit of anyone who comes by this page. Simply put, I hope you don't have this person's sentiment.

First off, there are many Chinese languages in the south, so for many people, particularly the older generation, Mandarin is NOT their native language. If you have a REAL interest in Chinese culture, people, language, etc., to the point that you want to communicate in people's native language, it's a no-brainer to learn at least a little of a dialect or two.

Second, any organization will do what they can based on resources. ChinesePod is headquartered in Shanghai, so many of the workers are surely Shanghainese.

Third, Shanghainese is a dialect of Wu Chinese, a language / language family that has more speakers than Cantonese, which itself is a dialect / variant of Yue Chinese. By native speakers, the top 4 Chinese language families are Mandarin, Wu, Yue, and Min (eg, Taiwanese, Hokkien, etc.). So, considering there's a good bit of Cantonese materials out there since it's so well-known in the United States, it's good to see ChinesePod releasing some Shanghainese stuff.
