May 26, 2008 at 6:37 PMNow it's clear why I had such a difficult time understanding Taiwan speech! I had learned Beijing-based 普通话 at UC Berkeley and - as a beginner - I was floored by the lack of retroflex sounds in Taiwanese speech. Now at the very least I know what to look for. Thanks for this valuable lesson!
