January 24, 2008 at 2:07 AM@Andy In Japan those two words mean just the same but today no one think them as euphemism (perhaps too much used to keep their original nuances). As for the words for toilet, I find it interesting a euphemism of Japanese which is said to have come from China doesn't seem to be used in China. The word is 雪隠 (there are several hypothesis on its ethimology)...

January 16, 2008 at 8:29 PM烟 originally meant smoke and thus fierce too. So for mnemonic help, you may remember "fire causes smoke".

To me, the most effective way was to research their original meaning in the dictionary and some composit words which included the target character. But as Japanese, I was surrounded with many usage examples, so you may need an additional way too.
