I also have the same problems as Heruilin, and of course lots of listening practice must be the answer. I think I'm a bit of a way behind you though, as even when reading the characters I find it hard to identify which group together (pinyin makes this so much easier)

according to my "Lonely Planet" guide the Bund is an Anglo-Indian term for the embankment of a muddy waterfront. Shengdan kuaile!

thanks Kyle, In "which meaning of eat tofu?" I was trying to suggest that I knew that there are two meanings, the literal meaning and the 'metaphorical' meaning. Bar.

Could I say: 什么的意思"吃豆腐" For "which meaning of eat tofu" in reply to the question "Do you eat tofu?" ? Also is: Chi(1) ruan(3) bu(4) chi(1) ying(4) a known expression for "to be open to persuasion not to coercion"? thanks, Bar.
