Batteries are tubular just like bamboo. 节 also is used in holidays, such as 国庆节, because they represent a kind of threshold between specific points in time - one knot of many on a bamboo tree, if you will. April 22, 2008 at 2:50 PMI had a hard time communicating in HK using Mandarin two years ago. Whenever I asked a question with Mandarin, the answer invariably would come back in Cantonese. End of conversation. They could understand me but could not (or would not?) speak putonghua.
