Chengyu's in China are way more important than you think and should be paralleled to idioms in other languages because they are different languages and have different cultures. History and culture are extremely integral to the Chinese language and this is where most Chengyu are rooted in. I suggest you actually live in China for a while or read some Chinese articles you will come across Chengyu's more than you would expect.

August 25, 2007 at 11:42 PM生词里的＂用武之地＂英文翻译好像不准确， 这个成语虽然使用了＂武＂这个字但是实际上它的意义应该跟 military 无关． 用中文来解释，应该说 ＂发挥潜能的机会，或者把个人力量派上用处＂用英文可以说 ＂having the opportunity to put talent or power to good use"
