December 13, 2007 at 12:16 PMOutside my campus here in Beijing the ayi was selling tangerines. When I asked the price she said "si kuai si jin". She's from the south so I can't notice any si/shi distinction. Anyway it took a while for me to understand that the deal was 10 kuai for 4 jin (1 jin = 0.5 kilo) - why cant she just say 2.5 kuai per jin? Later she remarks to her friend about how "mafan" it is to do business with me. The tangerines were good though.
