June 18, 2008 at 9:05 AMHi changye. I haven't consulted any literature so I probably know less than you. Since I'm Cantonese, I keep hearing that Mandarin is gravely influenced by Mongolian in the Yuan dynasty, and later, by Mantchurian in the Qing dyanasty. Nevertheless, it seems that there is no "翘舌音" in Mantchurian(ironically, the counterparts of Mandarin zh ch sh are only used to transliterate Chinese). I don't know about Mongolian though...

June 17, 2008 at 4:12 PMAs a graduating student from the Sun Yat-sen University of Canton, I would like to add that the English name was transliterated from Cantonese 孫日新 (IPA [syn jɐtsɐn]), instead of 逸仙([jɐtsin]). It seems that he had his English name well before his teacher in Hongkong changed his "號".

June 1, 2008 at 4:54 AMhitokiri: No, they are not interchangeable. In the traditional Chinese culture when two people get married, usually the woman joins the family of the man, so there are different verbs indicating this "direction". For the bride, she "嫁給" her husband. For the husband, he "娶(qu3)" the woman.
And THEY 結婚.
That means, 嫁's subject is the woman, 娶's subject is the man, and the subject for 结婚 is plural.

May 30, 2008 at 12:58 PMchangye: I searched 康熙字典, and found the pronunciation of "圾" in classical Chinese should be somewhat like "kiap/kap". The K sound might have changed to "ts" by patalization, forming "tsap". Since the ending for "垃 lap" is "p", the initial "t" got assimilated, yielding "lappsap". So I guess in the Min and Cantonese dialects, the characters should still be 垃圾.

May 14, 2007 at 3:15 PMHello!

May 9, 2007 at 5:41 AMHi amber and LeiGaoRui! The character 搽 cha2 is not used in mandarin, however it is always used in Cantonese as an equivalent to Mandarin 擦 ca1 or 涂 tu2 (to spread on).

June 18, 2008 at 9:15 AMhello changye,
I didn't know his 号 日新 until I went for a brief tour in our university history museum some months ago. Even people here in Canton thought Yat-sen was transliterated from 逸仙.
It's interesting that Zhongshan is actually his japanese surname. I'm not sure, but who knows if that's a reason why our University changed the name from Zhongshan University (ZSU) to Sun Yat-sen U.(SYSU) after the merge with Sun Yat-sen Medical School...
