On the subject of half born Chinese. I have always been pleasantly surprised to hear from Chinese people that they think half Chinese/half caucasian people are smarter and more beautiful than Chinese people or western people. This is, in my experience, a widely held opinion by mainland Chinese.
My wife is Chinese and we have two daughters, so perhaps it is flattery. But even before we had kids people would tell us how beautiful our children would be because they were half Chinese and half foreign. I can't even think of a Chinese friend or relative that did not whole heartedly agree with this idea. They would all list the famous singers and actors who were half Chinese. Even if it was flattery, (along the lines of complements about my Chinese ability) it was still nicer than the alternative.

September 8, 2008 at 2:53 AMFirst I really like the vocab tours. However, for some reason I was not able to synch the Traffic Vocab tour to my I-pod, but I was able to synch the salon vocab tour no problem. Are they in different formats or something?

July 19, 2008 at 4:37 AMI am looking at the July 2008 Esquire with Mike Myers on the cover and I don't see the article on Chinese Pod. Did I miss it? What page is it on?
Posted on: Roommates and What Chinese Think of Foreigners
April 19, 2008 at 7:37 PMI once read an an article in the World Journal (Chinese newspaper in the US) titled something like "Only a Foreigner Would Marry an Ugly Chinese Girl." The basic message of the story was that the writer thought that foreigners cared more about whether the girl had a "nice personality" than Chinese guys. I'm not sure if I agree with the sentiment. I know lots of foreign guys who list "appearance" as the number one criteria in their girlfriends, however, that was what the Chinese writer of the article thought.

April 6, 2008 at 3:44 AMI agree the lesson was a bit depressing. Detroit has other things going for it other than 60s Motown music. Eminem and Kid Rock are a bit more current examples of Detroit's pop music contributions. Detroit also has very good baseball, hockey and basketball teams. Finally, in the China-Detroit category, Mandarin is offered as a foreign language in ALL the public schools in Oakland County (the neighboring county). It is the first county in the US to do that. So there will be more and more Chinese-pod subscribers coming from here.

It is so sad to hear that you are leaving. Like so many others, I looked forward to QW and DA each week. Not only were your podcasts informative, but they were also always fun. I was really impressed at how you were able to insert your quirky charm into each podcast to keep grammer lessons entertaining. I hope that you know that you helped a lot of people learn more about Chinese, China and Chinese culture. Thank you for your excellent work.
Best of luck in New York.
