January 31, 2008 at 5:11 AMsorry, i meant COBOL (or what ever programming language they use) not COBAL, did the programmer also get into trouble? Also what if someone just took out 1000 yuan a few times but never noticed how much money was taken from their account? Would they also be in trouble? 也不知道多少别的人用了那个自助银行? 他们都有问题, 还是只是那两个人?

January 31, 2008 at 4:37 AMI read this story in the paper a while back and i don't really see what the problem is. The machine made the mistake and gave to much money while deducting too little. Now I personally wouldn't have done what these people did but I asked many foreign friends and they all think I am crazy. They all said they would keep taking money out until they couldn't anymore and anyone would be crazy not too. It's not their fault. It is the machine's fault. If anyone should get in trouble, shouldn't it be the person who programed the machine wrong. Maybe the COBAL programmer was part of the scam. People that I have met have had money appear in the account, where the bank made a mistake (eg. $1000, and they always have taken it out and none of them have ever been sentenced to jail.) Sometimes they need to pay it back later, but it can't really be called stealing because the bank gave them the money. Now, if these people purposely hacked the machine and stole the money from it, then they deliberately modified the machine to steal, and this would be a serious crime. Is there something in this story that I am missing, or is this just a cultural/legal difference? If it is a cultural/legal difference then i think it's very important for every foreign to hear this news story, so they don't go to jail for accepting a gift on what seems like a really lucky day.

January 31, 2008 at 12:36 PMbazza, 百度一下 爆米花 = 45,900,000篇 玉米花 = 261,000篇 so that's a pretty big difference. to be honest i have never heard anyone say 玉米花. It is really hard to get salty popcorn in China, it's always this sweet popcorn with what i believe is lard. I used to buy kernels from the people who make the sweet popcorn and go home and make my own, but that was always a complicated thing. They couldn't understand why I would want just the kernels or why someone would want popcorn with salt. Also i would have to say, if you air pop popcorn and just use a bit of salt it's WAY more healthy than the sweet stuff or the buttery stuff. Is there a saying in Chinese that means something like "If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself?"
