Are Chinese More Tolerant of Extra Marital Affairs and Mistresses?

Actor Wen Zhang recently broke the Chinese social media record after his apology for cheating on his wife went viral on weibo. This week we look at why this incident got so much attention in China. We also explore why Chinese seem to tolerate extra marital affairs, why mistresses are sometimes seen as a career option and does this signal the loss of a moral compass in China?

Here is a list of words and phrases we used in the show:

  1. 文章 (Wénzhāng): Wen Zhang (a Chinese actor)
  2. 马伊琍 (Mǎyīlí): Ma Yili (a Chinese actress)
  3. 劈腿 (Pītuǐ): two timer or have an extra marital affair
  4. 小三 (Xiǎosān): mistress
  5. 且行且珍惜 (Qiěxíng qiě zhēnxī): to cherish
  6. 好男人 (Hǎo nánrén): a good man
  7. 姐弟恋 (Jie dì liàn): an older woman dating a younger man
  8. 微博 (Wēi bó): Weibo
  9. 睁一只眼闭一只眼 (Zhēng yī zhī yǎn bì yī zhī yǎn): to keep an eye open and the other closed, i.e. to tolerate some kind of behavior
  10. 道德 (Dàodé): moral
  11. 老公 (Lǎogōng): husband
  12. 老婆 (Lǎopó): wife
  13. 家庭 (Jiātíng): family
