Whether you come for the geldings, or just for the gin and cigars, there's nothing like a day at the races. Today's Chinese podcast will teach you all about playing the ponies in Mandarin.

@pretzellogic Try going through the lesson on the dialogue page, mousing over the characters for the popups, and clicking on the sound buttons on the right for a clear unimpeded reading of each sentence. I'm sure you'll gain a more solid grasp of the story after that. :D

Hi pretzellogic

Even when you don't understand, it's still good to listen to the higher-level lessons. I think of it like a baseball player swinging a couple bats before going up to the plate. When the pitch comes, it feels like nothing.

And the guy in the lesson bet on the longshot and won!

Hi yankees

Yes, as a matter of fact, horse racing in China has a long, glorious history.

The 上海美术馆 Shanghai Fine Arts Museum used to be the headquarters of the Racing Association during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Other cities had tracks as well, and they still have them in Hong Kong.

After coming to power, the Communists banned it in an attempt to rain on the parade purify the People's morals.

And just last year, the Wuhan track re-opened. As a Saratoga Springs native, I now feel a little bit less homesick ;-)

Wow this was a tough one! Must be because I know next to nothing about horse racing. The one time I went to the racetracks I couldn't understand a word of what anyone was saying, and they were speaking English. :) Don't know if I agree with the guy's betting logic, but it sounds like he got really lucky there in the end.

在内地开设的赌场越多对中国发展越好。中国尽管已成为一个经济大国，许多中国公民在境外赌城挥金如土还是很不合适。中国贪官在国外赌场赔的公款迄今为止到底一共有多少钱？

这些不正当行为就可以算是一种慈善活动或者是新形式的ODA，但很可惜，没有人感谢中国。天要下雨人要赌钱，反正无法禁止赌博。既然那样，只好尽可能把赌徒在自己的国土上花钱！
