Much like a drug rehab, there are internet rehabs in China. Besides psychological counselling, they also get military style discipline and are absolutely cut off from the internet.

Last year I lived in 无锡 with a few other foreigners in a small apartment. Our heating was poor and it was difficult to stay warm during the winter, especially when that snow storm hit and stayed for a few months. We used to go to Web bars to hang out and kill a few hours while keeping warm, sometimes we would check mail and play games for 3 or 4 hours and then head out to find other cheap methods of warmth, such as a massage.. Often we would go back at night to kill some more time and the people we saw in the afternoon would be playing the same game with the same people. . I couldn't believe it, 10-12 hours in the same place!!

You bring up an interesting point.  I find that online games are even more pervasive in smaller cities where entertainment options are more limited.

This sounds familar to a town near my old home town in Canada. It was a small little one horse town, but was also the country's Meth captial.. Idol hands do the devils work...
