This week we're in the studio ringing in the new year with the Banson family, who brought three Chinese-studying kids with them in their visit to the CPod studios. Learn how they use ChinesePod (and hear the 三字经 rap), then find out about lessons to come, and discover why you should make this year the year you really kick your Chinese studies into full gear!

呵呵，Josephine听起来那么可爱，而且她的哥哥们很酷。这个播客是我最爱News and Features因为孩子们让我笑。【hehe,Josephine sounds soooo cute, and her brothers so cool. This podcast is my favourite news and features because the kids made me smile and laugh].I'd love to know the words to the rap Josephine sang...all were very impressive.I'd also be interested in the best way for a family to use ChinesePod [I presume families are all using one account...or am I wrong there?]...what is the best way to use vocab management and archiving of lessons [with labels I guess].Any tips anyone?

I was reminded of WC Fields being quoted as saying "never work with children and animals" but John did a superb job and was up to the task.Great stuff.Thankyou :)

@bababardwan: If you follow the link to the Wikipedia article in the intro, there's a Yellowbridge link on that page with the entire 三字经 content, fully annotated!

Ah,guilty of only having a squiz at the wikipedia articule and not reading it all.不好意思 [sorry].Didn't see the link first time so thanks for pointing that out.

Checked out the 三字经[3 character classic]..really cool...I hadn't come across it before.I like that it not only teaches kids 3 characters per line at a time, but also summarises some Confucian thought.

I just want to share Barbs enthusiasm about the 三字经. Look at these few lines (from the Wikipaedia link, I hope that it is correct):

人之初 (rén zhī chū) People at birth,

性本善 (xìng běn shàn) Are naturally good.

性相近 (xìng xiāng jìn) Their natures are similar,

習相遠 (xí xiāng yuǎn) Their habits make them different.

These few lines point to a fundamental difference in Chinese and Western cultures. Even young people often refer to this difference in our world views.

Great interview - sounds as if they were all a lot of fun - and those were some seriously impressive kids (even if hearing them made me want to sob bitter tears into my Chinese dictionary at my own progress...)

Baba, as far as I understand it the story on the Confucian side is a bit more complicated. So Mencius (Méngzǐ / 孟子) for one claims that human nature (rénxìng 人性) is good, but our nature is good only in the same way that an acorn's nature is to grow into an oak tree. For us to actually become good, there need to be all kinds of supporting conditions - and a fair amount of cultivation - in the same way that for a plant to actually become fully grown, it also needs cultivation.

There's a nice little video in Chinese over here about this kind of moral cultivation - the story comes from Mencius.
