btc10, the actual Expo site is temporary - under expo rules they're required to pull all the pavilions down within a few months of the expo finishing. However, the big deal for longer term SH residents (as opposed to those just visiting for expo) are the major infrastructure improvements they've made throughout the city. Trust me, the whole city has been like a big building site for the last 12-18months. And it's been non-stop - they redeveloped the road outside my flat recently, and were working from around 630am straight through to 3am, 7 days a week. The real benefit will be with SH for years to come after the expo.

An interesting fact I read the other day is that over 95% of expected visitors to expo are Chinese. The 4-5% overseas visitors that are expected to come (i believe around 3-3.5million) is no higher than the average number of overseas visitors to SH apparently!

The Shanghai World Expo definitely feels as important to Shanghai as the Olympics felt to Beijing, although I, too, am not as immediately clear on why.

One person explained it to me this way: "the Olympics was China's opportunity to put on a show for the world. The World Expo is the world's chance to come put on a show for China."

In any case, there's lots of economic stimulus going on!

As weibwo and xiasi point out, English is a very "loosely coupled" language. Words tend to be more general, i. e., less restrictive. One can change jobs, homes, girlfriends, opinions, clothes, appearance, personalities, etc. etc.
