I went through this a couple of times when I first arrived in China, but am now fortunate enough to have a nice network a chilled local friends around the country who share my preference for 自助旅行 zìzhùlǚxíng - and also prefer eating and live music and/or karaoke interspersed with the casual afternoon excursion to places that they themselves enjoy, as opposed to places they think visitors should see.

any chance on finding the Chinese word for 'vegan'? I had the opportunity to be a sort of freelance/ad hoc translator for a group of uni professors going on a trip through China. of the dozen or so participants 4 were vegetarian and 3 were vegan. Some of the reactions were hilarious (mostly in places like 丰都 or other rural areas) but I think it was partially my explanation of why the didn't eat animal products.

You can get humus in Shanghai?? please give the address!

I have to say when I first got here I was a strict vegetarian... and I have had to lower my standards after coming to China, (mostly because of living with a non-vegetarian.) I went to 枣子树 (Zao3 Zi Shu4) but the food was very oily... For the most part Chinese food has a lot of vegetables in it, so if you can get past the little bits of meat you should be fine, and of course this is the home of tofu.

snater,

I asked one of my Chinese friends if he knew any Chinese word for vegan, we ended up looking in the dictionary and not finding anything but "严格的食素主义者" (yan2 ge2 de5 su4 shi2 zhu3 yi4 zhe3) the meaning is close to "a strict vegetarian", He said most likely no one would know what you were talking about unless you said "我不吃肉" (wo3 bu4 chi1 rou4) (I don't eat meat)

thanks, Kesirui

After a while that's pretty much what I said. Even though it didn't really stop meat from showing up in 'meatless' dishes where we asked for no meat, the vegans eventually gave up after a couple of weeks, much to the dismay of their digestive systems.

For protesting being sent off, I got 别送、 but what did Pete say? something 步?

http://www.vegetarian-china.info/ has some simple phrases and lots of restaurants linked. I can't vet them since they are all Beijing/Shanghai.

I'm not vegetarian but really think that China is one of the best places in the world to eat vegetables. There are so many fantastic vegetarian dishes.

You can also say things like 一点点肉也不能吃。 And also 有肉、 我 不 付钱。

For vegan eating I found 纯素食主义 on one of the linked pages from the above site.

I loved this episode of DA.

I like the vegetarian meat because it tastes delicious. In my opinion it doesn't really taste like meat. Anyone in the DC area, who wants to try out this Buddhist cuisine without travelling to a temple in China, I highly recommend Yuan Fu Restaurant in Rockville, MD. It's so yummy.

I for one cannot wait to go to China and eat lots of (mostly) vegetarian food. I'll definitely take the advice of this episode and not worry about little details. One other great thing about Chinese cuisine for vegans, that wasn't brought up, is that dairy seems to be so rare.
