I have a question or two.

My first question is, I notice that the dialog's example, “已经多少年没见了”, uses 没.  I know that 了 and 没 usually don't combine.  I also know there are exceptions.  Is this exception always applicable to the 'present perfect'?

Now the hard question(s).  Does anybody know if Chinese tenses can generally be correlated to English tenses, i.e past perfect, simple past, present continuos and so on?  The reason I ask is that I get the gist of simple Chinese grammar, but sometimes I get confused with more subtle situations.  My problem is that none of my textbooks compare Chinese grammar to English.  They just try to explain it in a Chinese way, which sometimes works; sometimes doesn't.  The internet websites that I have seen only attempt to explain elementary Chinese tenses.  If I could know such-and-such Chinese sentence structure follows such-and-such English tense, that would be helpful.  Maybe someone knows a good textbook or website?

I believe you can use "le" combined with "mei" in this case, since it relates to something that started in the past and continues today.

So, I think you are right...it is because of the present perfect tense.  

The line with "four eyes, eight legs" has two "zhi" measure words in the pinyin. (I think John was drinking when he put the transcript together, maybe).

That's an intriguing question. Let me try to answer it.

(a) 昨天我没去看电影。
(b) 我好久没去看电影了。

Both (a) and (b) are correct Chinese. As you said, you can't place 了 at the end of sentence (a), Now, the problem is why you can use 了 in sentence (b)？

It's because the 了 in (b) indicates that the situation of "我没(不)去看电影" has continued over "好久" time. Pls look at sentence (b) this way, (我好久没去看电影)了, but it's not 我好久【(没去看电影)了】。

By the same token, you can say （已经多少年没见）了？

三个问题：

Initially they talk about 大学 and then they talk about how they used to drink on the sly at 学 校 [which I would have thought referred to school].I take it this 学校 is also referring to Uni days? If so,from a cultural viewpoint,would the schools really not let them drink?

地..how is this structural particle functioning in the dialogue?

They talk about this being an example of a 猜拳。。a finger guessing game.So I suppose they are keeping tabs of which round they're up to...how many frogs...by counting on their fingers.对不对？

Love the 一边。。一边 pattern.

Particularly love the game.Great sound/rhythm to it,esp with the rhyming at the end of each line.Classic that you can't use a number to describe how many splashes,you have to repeat 扑通 however many times...should get interesting if one survives a few rounds.Sounds like fun.Another thing to notice about the game is that each round has an odd number [3] of steps,so that in each round the lines [frog parts being counted/splashes] swap which should help add to the confusion.

You'd think B's error would go the other way if he'd had a few too many to drink and was trying to visualise how many 青蛙 legs he was up to.

Also, the English voice in the audio review sounded like he was in quite a hurry.  Maybe it was a few minutes before quitting time and he said all the words in one go...
