菜鸟(cainiao) was featured in the Shanghai daily Buzzwords column last week.  They gave the following expanation.  "菜鸟 rookie, novice. The Chinese term literally means young birds which have just begun to fly. Lack of skill and experience often makes them faltering and an easy target for their enemies or rivals."
