Screeching scooter brakes, cacophonous construction and prolonged iPod use to block it all out is a China dweller’s recipe for auditory undoing. Before you end up bidding an early retreat to the world of grandpa hearing aids, listen (while you still can) to this podcast and learn about being hard of hearing, in Mandarin Chinese.

I rarely have opportunities
to say “大声一点” here in China.
On the other hand, I often find myself
SHOUTING at someone “小声一点” or “小点儿声”.

By the way, almost all the Chinese dramas and movies have subtitles in 普通话 as a default probably mainly for the benefit of ethnic minorities or older generations particularly in south China, who are usually not very good at Mandarin Chinese.

Needless to say, those subs are also big aids for people who have poor hearing, the deaf, and Mandarin learners like us. I imagine they are helpful even for native speakers especially when they see historical dramas. I appreciate this people-friendly system.

My Zhejiang province university students often tell me I have a good body.........haha...now I know this is just a common saying to the old !! Maybe many of the body parts are now 'bu xing' :) After living in China for some time, anyones hearing will surely be impaired! You do not need to be old for this...Wenzhou city is where Chinese drivers only know two speeds, stop and go, and when they are stopped, they only know about leaning on the horn ! Oh, my poor ears.

That was one of the first things that struck me as "unusual" when I came to China the first time - everybody exercising in the streets: Old people walking back-wards or other such "strange" things as slapping their body, groups of middle-aged women doing dances (aerobic, disco, ethnic folk dances, you name it), people of all ages doing taiqi... When I was more energetic, I enjoyed those early morning hours running around the track at our university, joining in with people of all ages doing their morning exercises.

Hi maolai7845,

Chinese cars still might not
have top quality in the world, but
the specs of horns are really amazing.

Hi wildyaks,

Please don’t ever walk backward
because you can't notice holes, bottles,
dog litter 等什么的 beforehand on the streets.

ha, ha... I will take your warning to heart. No more walking backward....
Coming to think of it, I have never heard an accident reported because of that very exercise. Have you?

Hi wildyaks,

I once got reported firsthand by one of my Chinese friends, who playfully started to walk backwards just beside me one night, then tripped over a curb and fell down on his back. I was very surprised when he suddenly disappeared from my sight.

Luckily enough, he was not hurt perhaps thanks to the thick coat and hat that he wore that night. I strongly recommend you wear a tough helmet, a SONY or a TOYOTA might be best reliable, while walking backwards. Be careful about hidden dangers.
