How do you chaps feel about this format? I like having Aggie around. It makes the lesson conversational without inviting the tone police to come in and kick butt. There is a wee bit of English used, but it is used only to keep the dynamic moving. A flowing conversation is so much easier to listen to - I think! (Furthermore, I find in real life that conversations often change from one language to another.) Two other things strike me about the lesson. First, the two teachers are really supportive. If you lkisten to their inflection it's all very kind. This is the Chinese way to sound nice and encouraging. Contrast that with a CCTV news reader, and you'll see what I mean. (We need to do more lessons on the various types of register/discourse.) Secondly, it occurred to me that business (or any specialized area) is the perfect topic for dishing out real lexical chunks. The lesson has lots of them. I kind of liked this lesson. Maybe it was because I had 2 teachers and they were terribly kind to me!!!]]> Ken Carroll

Can anyone recommend a free flashcard site for learning chinese characters/words? I want to go bollistic this wekeend and memorize heaps. I know Ken often says its not the best way to learn the language but I think I am lacking mostly in vocab at the moment. And I don't think it can hurt. chinesepods flashcard is OK but I am required to select words (which is good) but I want to focus on learning a lot of charcters and phrases. I would also like to be able to see hanzi on one side and both english and pinyin (as an option) on the other. If I can get to a level where I can read a newspaper well I would be pretty stoked.]]> Craig

I think this lesson was the best of both worlds. Two ladies with perfect tonal pitch and realistic dialogues interspersed with Ken's enthusiastic occasional English translation. This I believe is the recipie for Nirvana (alright, at least Chnesepod Nirvana ) - pleasing those who vociferously vote for a mostly Mandarin experience as well as the grovelling poor begging for an opportunity to grasp some air in the intermediate pool.]]> Chand Malik

I could follow some of the discussion but as I mentioned yesterday for lazy people I think somehow it is useful to help extract the highly used chunks and I would hope post for discussion. So here is what I highlighted. Since it is business I was surprised I only saw/heard 但是 once ! 最近，你的.......怎麼樣 great line recently how is...... I suppose for some you could fill in with 感情生話 (love life) 我聽說........or 我聽說你的 great for around the proverbial water cooler "I heard you..... 雖然現在...........但是 working for a Japanese company I know this one in Japanese as well. Always waiting for the "但是" 我同意你對看法........但是 That's the way I would expect it. 你怎麼在這個...... but I like better a take off on this 你怎麼可以! Are you familiar with this one Ken? I loved this format. As one of the foremost asking for more Chinese in the intermediate I thought this amount was perfect. A few words of English now and then is very helpful, but the conversation kept up the Chinese. Great job guys.]]> Sue

Nasir, Thank you for the great suggestion. It's surprising that we've never touched on any stock market terms ever. Well, considering what the Chinese stock market is like, our eluding it is perfectly understandable. It's better than a sleeping pill, but will give u 'chronic' cardiac arrests. And the coaching you got from the taxi driver is a perfect snapshot of the market environment in China.]]> jenny zhu
