What used to be an annoying clanging shouting racket at 6:00am is now the most welcoming sound in the world. Your naive western misconceptions of refund policies have been dashed, and your microwave only came with a one week warranty. Alas... the friendly neighborhood repairman on wheels. A loud blessing in disguise. In this podcast, learn how to get his help and fix your Mandarin Chinese at the same time.

非常有用的课 fēicháng yoŭyòng de
Very practical lesson.

does 回收 huíshoū imply that you are getting a bit of cash back?

Used to return my 啤酒瓶 píjiŭ píng (beer bottles) to the convenience store and get a few mao refund while restocking. Now in new neighborhood and last night I went to a store where they accepted the empties but didn't give me any discount. Kind of wondering how to ask if they will give me a discount or not; kind of think this would be different than 打折 dăzhé.

@kesirui - how about a non-answer? 他有问题 could mean he's asking a question, or it could mean you think he's a freak.

@sushan - maybe you just need to ask for it. I think the deposit is still called 押金 (ya1jin1) for bottles, but don't know. Friend and I used to get ours delivered from the store for 1.5 a piece and any refunded deposit went into his pocket.

I think even the most naive westerner wouldn't ask the refund for a ten year old microwave oven.
it's amazing, however, how long those ovens last. My mom's is already fifteen.

may I say: 心修吗?我心碎了 Xīn xiū ma? Wǒ xīnsuì le!
if it is a pretty girl fixing things? can that be a line?

Convenience stores usually dont accept things for recycling. If you want to know, you can ask:

你们回收啤酒瓶吗？
Nǐmen huíshōu píjiǔpíng ma？

In some residential areas, there are some people who will recycle old things such as 报纸、矿泉水瓶、啤酒瓶等等，they usually are on a bicyle with a cart and wait outside the apartment complex gate.

回收 (huíshoū) does imply that you are getting a bit of money for it here. However, they don't use the word 押金 (yājīn) like we do in English. Basically if you wanted to know how much money you will get back for it, you just ask how much.

In my city here in China, I sometimes see a woman shouting out “旧衣服换鸡蛋 (jiu4 yi1 fu huan4 ji1 dan4)! 旧衣服换鸡蛋!” on the street. I didn’t understand what she was saying when I heard it for the first time.

And later one of my Chinese friends explained me that those women would give you some eggs in exchange for your old clothes. I think it is a very reasonable system. China is really a recycling-oriented superpower.
