I was told that wine was a good present to buy as a gift for Chinese businessmen and that the sweet, winter wines grown in Canada and northern California were especially popular. They are about $80 a bottle but have always been well received. The first time, however, I purchased two bottles for my host who generously used it to toast me. I am not sure it was savored that way but it was fun nonetheless.

I travel sometimes with a man who was an executive with Budweiser and toured several very high quality breweries. Bud seems to be gaining in popularity and has purchased a number of Harbin breweries in Northern China.

This was a good lesson. I am sure that it will not be long before Chinese wine is just as good as any other.

Hey y'all,

This all seems very professional to me - even Amber throwing it in the taxi. Living in Changchun I moved from one side of town to the other. I approached some guys sleeping in their tricycles, and paid them 40Y each.

They loaded EVERYTHING into two trikes, and made two small mountains of stuff on the back. They balked when I wanted to ride in a taxi and encouraged me to ride on top of the mountain.

We cycled up hill and downhill, through crazy traffic, and got to my new place. They one tiny guy tied the fridge to his back and carried it up the stairs. It all took about two hours - I was well impressed.

Incidentally, what do we call those trikes and the guys that sit in them?

i know lots of guys who swear by Great Wall 98'

apparently a good vintage

the problem with that is, can u trust the bottles in shops labelled 98' are actually from 1998?

I would think it's quite difficult to track down a genuine bottle of great wall 98'

In terms of cost, there's no reason why china shouldn't be able to produce decent wines for 30 or 40 yuan, with a reliable quality

as South American and European countries can produce wines costing 2 - 5 euros that taste fine.

it's just bad producing techniques, and is another example of poor food safety in China

Also, for that money consumers should expect reliable quality. Restaurants should be more responsible for the wines they sell.

If i get a corked bottle in a restaurant in China, i will demand another bottle, and so should you.

i live in Xinjiang, which is very very good wine country.

Suntime make good wines from about 36 yuan to 60

Yep, great show. My favourite Chinese wines were mentioned - Changyu and Suntime. I expect to pay 30-40 rmb for decent wine. I've moved four times so far but have not had much stuff any of the times, so my general mo has been to carry stuff gradually from one place to the next and stick any big items on one of those delivery carts.
