I think one of the hardest things I find when we live in China is respecting people's different perspectives and beliefs even when they seem really superstitious. I especially found this with the   月子 yuezi after giving birth, there are so many things you can't do already as a new mum, and then a whole lot more that will bring bad luck... it's hard work!

In those places we had looked, flats on the 4th floor were calculated on the same basis as the other ones (square footage, the higher the more expensive...or was it the lower the more expensive..). My stepfather insists on calling 4 "fa" (from the do-re-mi-fa in singing) so that it gets the same meaning as the 8....the beliefs can be intepreted in a way that suits people sometimes:)

When she told my mom she had to take shower when she was still in the hospital and the food served included cold fruit, my mom burst into tears--for her, it's the worst torture you can give to a woman who just have babies.
