Anyone who has lived through an earthquake, or twenty, in a 1970s-built back alley Taipei apartment knows a little about geology. China has its fair share of dramatic geological events, and today we go back to class to learn about them. So next time the building starts swaying, fear not. This is not scary, it is simply another rush-inducing Chinese learning experience.

Having the digital version of the 石油词典 on my 步步高 learning pda is not the most useful thing in the world. Unless I try to answer mark's questions that is:

Sedimentary Rocks: 沉积岩
sandstone: 砂岩
shale: 页岩
limestone: 石灰岩

Igneous Rocks: 火成岩
granite: 花岗岩
basalt：玄武岩，柱石岩
obsidian：黑曜岩
pumice：浮石

Metamorphic rocks: 变质岩
quartzite: 石英岩
schist: 片岩
slate: 板岩

And after the fact, I found this:

You'll probably find that useful only if you REALLY love rocks.

By the way, Geology Rocks!

You only have to look at this map http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/pager/events/us/2008ryan/index.html#exposuremap
and you can see by the estimated population risk how many people could be exposed to a severe risk. I can't even imagine what does it mean to be in a zone exposed to a X Mercalli.

I have a question for you regarding the usage of
"啊." You use it several times during the lesson, when explaining the dialogue's grammar. For example:

-地理示意图不是简单的地图啊。
-特别是在一个语言环境里面啊。
-这是我们的语言习惯啊.

I know it sometimes means "is that right?," and is also used for emphasis. Would you mind explaining why you used "啊" in these examples? Thanks!

Hi sushan,

Thanks for an interesting word “地摇”. I found another word that means “an earthquake” in my dictionaries, i.e. “地动” (di4 dong4, ground moves). It seems that both “地摇” and “地动” are very colloquial words.

I think that the word “地震” is a kind of scientific term, and probably it wasn’t very long ago that the word became popular in China, therefore “地摇” and “地动” might sound more “realistic” for 老百姓 (ordinary people).

In Japan, a country that is famous for earthquakes, the word “地震” has a long history. You can find the word “Gixin” (地震) in a Japanese-Portuguese dictionary (1609) published by the Society of Jesus in Japan.

I suppose that “地震” was adopted as a scientific term by Japanese scholars at the end of the 19th century, and later it was perhaps introduced to China by Chinese students who were studying in Japan at that time.

Just a guess!

On reflection, I'm not sure that any of those statements were true at the time of the Tangshan quake.

Well.... really off topic, but I didn't know buddha had a confirmed birthday. I mean, his words weren't even recorded for 400 years or so.

Coincidence, Sign from God, or Alien invasion- one way or another, a lot of people lost their lives, and I'm really sorry for them to have been thus taken without warning.

Politics and natural disasters just don't seem to be related- and I feel that a lot of people just look for reasons to doubt Beijing's capabilities to host the Olympics. I know that goes on in my high school- It's shameful

I wish that there was some way that I could help those people... It really is a sad thing. I've read that the death count might be up to 50,000 people because the roads are so bad that it's difficult for the rescue groups to reach the victims. There are a lot of people saying bad things about the Chinese gov't right now, but I believe that the Gov't is really trying their best to help those people. It's a difficult situation and with the state our world is in now, it seems like these kinds of natural disasters are only going to happen more often. The high death toll is inevitable but I hope the rescue workers and victims remain strong to get out of the mess over there.

Aussies will remember the Thredbo landslide a few years ago, where people were trapped under rubble in sub-zero temperatures and had diminishing chance of survival over time as rescuers worked frantically, sadly finding body after body.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997_Thredbo_landslide

After several days it was conceded that the chance of finding a survivor at that stage was "infinitesimally small". The next day, Stuart Diver's voice was heard and he was pulled from the rubble suffering hypothermia but not too badly injured, and the whole country cheered through their tears.

The news today talks of a few late survivor discoveries in China, especially children, who have miraculously survived under horrible circumstances and against all our fears for them. I do hope those unexpected finds of survivors continue!

Not that I'm superstitious or anything, but, well, just in case, maybe we need another lesson to balance this one. An encouraging tale of miraculous survival against all odds!
