Some Chinese suffixes （词尾）, such as “化”, “性”, “型”, “感”, and “主义”, came into use in China only about a hundred years ago, which was a result of Europeanization of the Chinese language.

These words, which are translations of European concepts, were created first by Japanese people, and later introduced to China mainly by Chinese intelligentsia who studied in Japan at that time.

The three major East Asian languages, Chinese, Korean and Japanese, were greatly influenced by European languages during modernization in the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

Below are some examples I found on the net.

Have you studied Japanese and Korean too? I think you commented before on one of my comments a while back.

If you speak Korean, I wonder if you know of a good source for cognates. For example "可能性" and "가능성" I know there are thousands of examples out there, and I keep noticing them as I'm studying Chinese, but it'd be great to have a website or book that lays them out for you.

HI martubhelou

I'm afraid I only have a source written in Japanese (PDF file), which is the paper titled "Influence of Japanese language on modern Chinese and Korean" written by a Korean-Chinese researcher.

You can find some lists of Japan-made Chinese words starting at page 3, and lists of Japan-made Korean words starting at page 11. I think they are worth glancing at even if you can't read Japanese.

http://www.nsu.ac.jp/nsu_j/kikan/lab/e-asia/17-5.pdf

As you know, modern Korean contain tons of words and phrases which were borrowed not only from ancient Chinese but also from modern Japanese, mainly because Korea was under Japanese rule in the first half of the 20th century.

Actually, Korean people can't communicate anymore without using those Japan-made words, and similarly, we Japanese also can't communicate without using words borrowed from Chinese and some European languages, mainly English and German.

PS 可能性(가능성) is also one of those words borrowed from Japanese.

If you are subscribed you get them downloaded to i-Tunes anyway; you don't need Dashboard do you? I find the Lessons tab more useful. There is also an email notice but this seems to come a few days after the lesson is available.

If we try to remember how it was before, we don't need Dashboard for anything. Some people find the Latest and Replies to Me tab useful.

I get QingWen in my dashboard and I never knowingly subscribed to anything since the changes. I have just left it alone; everything I got before I get now. Wait, maybe I had to add the Shanghaihua thing - do you join a group, I can't remember.

If you are subscribed you get them downloaded to i-Tunes anyway; you don't need Dashboard do you? I find the Lessons tab more useful. There is also an email notice but this seems to come a few days after the lesson is available.

Yeah, I have the same problem with several of my lesson channels, including QingWen. I've subscribed to both the channel, as well as the corresponding group, but I still have to add each of the lessons manually, they are no longer added automatically.

I also just got an email announcement for a new 'media' level lesson, even though I'm not subscribed to that level (only in my dreams!)

We all just got back from the long holiday - sorry about the delay in responding! A couple of things to check: you can find out exactly what's supposed to appear in your lesson feed by checking on the settings wheel icon on the top right of the dashboard. Do you see N&F, Qing Wen, etc. groups listed here?

Also, all new lessons and shows are added at the bottom of your dashboard lesson list, not the top.

I'll have someone on the tech. team look into this again. Not having problems on this end but clearly something's off if the lessons aren't showing up in your dashboard feed.

Hi Catherine

Why are new lessons added to the bottom? You make it sound like a feature; I thought it was a bug that would soon be fixed. It would look better if they were added to the top. It would be easier to see, easier to get to, and would give it some importance., And it would be consistent with the Latest and Replies to Me tabs. It's got to be a bug, right? Don't tell us that it is always going to look like this. :)
