The third tone is basically the middle child of the Mandarin line-up. It gets abused like a red-headed step child. Sometimes it's third, sometimes it gets ridden roughshod by second tone, and sometimes it straps a fourth tone on for good times. Third tone suffers from low self-esteem and is still trying to find its true self. Listen to this podcast and give the third tone the love it missed out on as a child.

The tone group of lessons has been really helpful so far. 2nd tone is still toughest for me--often I use the 1st tone when I think I'm using 2nd! And 3rd tone easily sneaks into my 2nd tone attemps--but some words are easier than others, I dont know why.
Loved the example of the emphatic NO3; everyone has said it like that at one point or another.
Keep up the great work!

OK, if two 3rd tones follow each other, the first becomes a 2nd tone. Is this only the case if the two 3rd tones are part of the same word? For example if the last character in word 1 is a 3rd tone and the first character of word 2 is a 3rd tone, does this rule still apply across word boundaries?

I'm glad to see the tone's broken down one by one. The lesson for tone 2 was especially great. I feel comfortable saying that I have mastered each tone individualy. The trouble comes when I start using sentences. If I slow down to think about each tone for every word then I don't sound natural and if I just start talking at a regular pace while ignoring tones then I don't make any sense. I'm sure this is something that will be corrected naturally as I keep listening and studying.

Also, I would like to support Lajiao1's idea of continuing these kinds of lessons by having lessons on tone pairs.
You guy's at CPod do a great job at presenting matters in a way that I can understand easily. So I eat, breathe, and sleep CPod on a daily basis. Keep up the Great work!

Totally confused about these 3rd tones here. ..I am told that a 3rd tone before any other tone changes to the first half of the 3rd tone....is this right? If so how does it impact the preceding 3rd tones? Any help with an explanation of how I would pronounce the following expression..
