Hey everyone, sorry that I have been gone, for anyone that may have noticed :P A really bad storm hit my area and I was without power for 5 days. As I was sitting in the dark with my dog, I was thinking about how I never had heard of power outages in China when I was there. Are they rare? Oh, I'm sorry to hear that a bad storm hit your area. Are you afraid when you sit with your dog in the dark? Every summer in China, there are a lot of "台风 táifēng (typhoon)". When 台风 comes, it usually takes bad weather. Recently some areas in China also hit by "台风". And when we have no electricity, we can use "蜡烛 làzhú（candle）" to get light, and we sit around to play with "扑克'pū kè (poker)" and other interesting games, or just have a sleep.]]> Connie Cheng

here's a stupid question. Any type of automobile can be called a 汽車, correct? I consulted an HK Cantonese speaker (who sometimes are bad consultants on this) on this topic and withing our converstaiton I concluded that that was anything with "air" emiting from the tailpipe can be called a 汽車... the cynical response I gave was "如果有汽就可以叫汽車囉." ie. bus 公供汽車 = bus, 汽車 = bus, 汽車 = car, 電單車= motor cycle, 摩托車 = motor cycle... etc. with that reasoning... assuming that it is correct, and that any motor vehicle emitting some kind of "air" or exhaust can be called a 汽車... What one call an electric car? It does not emit or consume air. Would a fuel cell car be called a 汽車? It emits water and oxygen. 水車?]]> Andy (美国土子)

Airplanes - jia or tai 一架飛機 or 一台飛機 Boats - sou - 三艘船 Connie: instead of 打的 to hail a taxi, how would one use 出租車 or 計程車 in a sentect to hail a taxi or is that too out of fashion? BTW, don't say 打的 (C:daa2 dik1) in Cantonese while in HK. It means to "hit your penis", at least to the young ppl it will mean that.
