A place of extremities, our Shanghai: blistering in the summer and arctic in the winter. All worth it for the autumn though. Fancy a “talk about the changing seasons” with another? Then take our hand as we stroll down a red leaf covered path of knowledge, as in this podcast you will learn to wax poetic in Mandarin Chinese about things such as heat and humidity.

Mark
There is a mistake in the link for the mp3 (an extra at the end. I broke the link for my browser.

On another topic. The current poll on the site asks how many languages we speak. I struggle a lot with what speaking a language means. Is it fluency? Is it speaking a few words, or something in-between? To make the question concrete, at what Chinesepod level should I say that I speak Chinese?

ChinesePod
Mark,

My definition is 'having the ability to communicate'. If you can function, even on a basic level, in a language other than your native language, then I'd say you 'speak' that language. (But hey, that's just my definition.) There's a blog post that explores the question in more detail here:
http://blogs.chinesepod.com/2006/10/07/how-many-languages-do-you-speak/

Great lesson. I really do love the new and heartier Elementary Lessons. There really is a lot to ponder in this lesson. I was a little taken back by the use of 比較 as my first thinking of this word is to compare two items but yes I do see it can be used to mean relatively. I suppose one could also just say : 春秋的氣候不錯. Yes?

Now if I truly wanted to respond by comparing Spring/Autumn to Summer/Winter is this correct ? Must I use 氣候 twice? So it says The climate of Spring/Autumn compared to the climate of Summer/Winter is very good (much better)

春秋的氣候比冬夏的氣候很好

Or one could take out the seasons and use Shanghai and Beijing and again must one say 上海的氣候比北京的氣候很好. I think this is important because I can think of many possibilities for instance remove氣候 and replace with 烹飪法 cuisine.

I haven't looked yet in the Extended Part yet as the 今天的天氣是完美
