Despite the majority of our staff being passificus apatheticus when it comes to soccer football--we simply couldn’t ignore that World Cup thingy. In this podcast, Jenny, John and Aric teach “let’s go”, “great shot”, “REFEREE!!!”, and more, all in Mandarin Chinese. Now, if you’ll excuse us, there are some baseball reruns to catch.

Corey
Just a little side comment on 加油. I think this is a pretty old expression. When I first studied Chinese back in the early 90's, it was in our text books (Elementary Chinese Reader 1,2,3,4), which were, I'm pretty sure, published in Beijing. And I think those texts were written at 10-20 years before that. So I'm guessing it at least dates to the '70s.

I still remember the smell of the paper used in those books - 很臭! ;)

Mashhood
Jenny,
Thank you so much! Xie4 xie ni3!

When I read your reply, I almost fainted! I really like the way the teaching is so personal, even though we're sitting thousands of miles away! You guys are doing a great job, and have been a great help in motivating me to keep studying at times when I've felt a bit overwhelmed.

Thank you

Zjemi （甄 玫 ）
To Jenny and the two 讨厌的大嗓门美国人**(Jenny taught me that) who pretend that they didn't play soccer when they were little,

Big 谢谢for a delightful lesson, and the promise that there will be more. Since the Americans may soon be eliminated (but we will 加油them to the end), we will switch our allegiance to the Aussies. 加油to all of us learning Chinese.

**tai3yan4 de da4sang3men2 mei3guo2ren2 for those who didn't read Jenny's earlier list.
= obnoxious loud Americans
But John and Aric, you know I don't mean it.

Will
Thanks for fixing that, Rian. Great choice of vocab by my opinion. It's the sort of thing you can yell at the TV in the heat of the moment, during whatever sporting match you're watching.
So sweet of you Jenny to pick Australia to go for (was that before or after they beat Japan in stunningly vicarious style?). 澳大利亚加油！
Actually I'm not much of a soccer fan. But who cares.
Does vocab like 好球 work in other domains? For example, if someone pulls off a marvellous scheme of strategic importance in the workplace, would saying 好球 be appropriate, or would I sound like a sports nut?

jenny zhu
Mashhood,
What a stunning achievement you've made in learning the writing. It's definitely an area of interest and value to a lot of people. We could explore that possibility. We'll keep up the work. Cheers!

Paul
When I first downloaded this episode...it was the "I Like Beef" lesson.

I know there is a lot of beefy players involved with the "World Cup"...but this is ridiculous.

I'll re-download...and see if I get the same result.
