Just a little side comment on 加油. I think this is a pretty old expression. When I first studied Chinese back in the early 90's, it was in our text books (Elementary Chinese Reader 1,2,3,4), which were, I'm pretty sure, published in Beijing. And I think those texts were written at 10-20 years before that. So I'm guessing it at least dates to the '70s. I still remember the smell of the paper used in those books - 很臭! ;)]]> Corey

Thanks for fixing that, Rian. Great choice of vocab by my opinion. It's the sort of thing you can yell at the TV in the heat of the moment, during whatever sporting match you're watching. So sweet of you Jenny to pick Australia to go for (was that before or after they beat Japan in stunningly vicarious style?). 澳大利亚加油！ Actually I'm not much of a soccer fan. But who cares. Does vocab like 好球 work in other domains? For example, if someone pulls off a marvellous scheme of strategic importance in the workplace, would saying 好球 be appropriate, or would I sound like a sports nut?]]> Will
