A group of 100 migrants escaping from Libya were rescued from two rubber boats by the El Hiblu 1, an oil tanker that was on its way to Tripoli, the Libyan capital.

The group, which includes 15 women and 47 claiming to be minors, has now safely made it to a port near the Maltese capital, Valletta.

After boarding the ship that rescued them, the Libyans forced the captain to change direction and turn towards Europe.

The captain of the Palau-flagged El Hiblu 1 established contact with the Maltese authorities and told them that the Libyans were forcing the ship to go towards Italy’s southernmost island of Lampedusa or Malta.

Subsequently, Maltese armed forces boarded the vessel and overpowered the Libyan group. Five ringleaders have been arrested.

Italy’s hard-line interior minister, Matteo Salvini, referred to the hijacking as “the first act of piracy on the high seas with migrants.”
