Two Saudi sisters have been granted asylum in an undisclosed country after hiding in Hong Kong for six months.

Last September, Reem and Rawan (pseudonyms) were stopped by Saudi consular agents during a layover in the Hong Kong international airport. The Saudi agents canceled the sisters’ passports, but local authorities granted the women temporary permission to stay in Hong Kong.

Reem and Rawan had intended to seek asylum in Australia after fleeing their family during a holiday in Sri Lanka.

The sisters, who reported having been abused by their male relatives, had been planning their escape for years.

In an interview with CNN, the sisters said that they feared severe punishment and perhaps death awaited them if they were forcibly returned to their family.

The pair could have faced criminal charges in Saudi Arabia for renouncing Islam and for leaving their home without their male guardian’s approval.

In Saudi Arabia, women must receive permission from a male relative to work, travel, or get married.
