hmm...i wanna consult some of you guys a question;
several days ago,my friend asked me if i'd like to be a chinese teacher to teach foreigner chinese online.after a series of discussions,we made deal,now i already choosing for chinese learning book for five hours,but i didnt know which one is good for chinese starter.you know teach those ppl who is a chinese starter,so i wanna ask you,is there any of them have went to chinese class before?if so,can you remember the book you have learned before?i hope you could give me some suggestions abt choose books,cuz maybe some of them bought books and learn it from teachers.
i am really need some advices and i appreicate if youcould help me,hehe.thank you!really!

September 15, 2010, 10:14 PMI think there is no one correct answer, I think chinesepod would be the best answer!
Apart from that it depends on the person. For example, If they might ever go to taiwan they should be using PAVC (Practical Audio Visual Chinese), however if china, maybe NPCR (New practical chinese reader).

I guess Tal has used them. I'm in Japan so all the (very boring, can't recommend any really) textbooks I've used are for Japanese learners.

When I came to China in 2004 I used to study those books quite a lot, (that was before I discovered Chinesepod!) The content is a little old-fashioned compared to CPod, but I still feel I learned so much from them, especially the explanations of grammar points and the correct writing of characters. The first books in the series are very good for beginners I still feel, and for you the good thing would be that all the explanations and comments are in both English and Chinese!

Hi huami - of course I don't mind answering your questions! I first heard of that book from 2 foreign friends of mine who were also in China. They were having lessons from a Chinese teacher who was using that series of books with them. I was busy with work so I just studied the book at home in my spare time, I also bought the tapes and listened to them a lot. My Chinese was pretty simple at that time, I guess I'd say I was then at elementary level, whereas now I'd generally consider myself an intermediate level student.
There's a companion series of 2 books called 看图说话 which I also used and also recommend to all, they contain some wonderful and hilarious dialogues and stories which I still fondly recall, as well as teaching many useful words and phrases.

Hey Tal, I used these books as well when I first came to China; seemed to be more authentic 'Chinese' (culture-wise) compared to ones I'd been exposed to in Australia (eg. Integrated Chinese published in the US - only the oldies will remember this). But in Australia it seems the NPCR has taken over as the preferred text. Integrated Chinese does not have a lot to recommend it now, but I learnt a lot from it, and it did have both simplified and traditional character sets in the same text - clever layout.
And I liked those explanations in both Chinese in English in the ones you linked to.

and i already find the book,NPCR.it contain 6 or 7 series;
by the way,看图说话，what do you think best if compared with NPCR?

To be honest I've never used NPCR so I can't compare the two. Really though, I believe that when you're teaching, a very important part is you! It's all about the rapport (和睦关系) you can make with your student, how well you communicate, how patient and encouraging you can be! If you can do those things, 那是最重要的！
