October 12, 2010, 08:03 PMIf I type the name "Michael" into Google Translate, it returns 迈克尔 (Màikèěr). Then when I search Google for this name I get Michael Jackson, Michael J. Fox and so on.
I realize that it is preferable to be given a Chinese name, maybe one which is in some way reflective of one's character, but if there is a standard Chinese translation of one's name, is there any harm in using it? Mind you, my transliterated given name doesn't have much of a ring to it.

It would be the same for a Chinese person buying a home, or doing any sort of business, in an English country.
You, for example, would write your last name 宋 out in roman script, Song. That's a good name! Easy to pronounce. Your given name 永瑞 would be more problematic. Yongrui is hard for us to pronounce (which makes it harder to remember). You could use it anyway, or you could choose an English name, or use an English name in addition to your Chinese names.
